After his first book, Digital Fortress, almost passed me by, he wrote Angels and Demons, which was probably one of the half-dozen most exciting thrillers of last year. It is a pleasure to report that his new book lives up to his reputation as a writer whose research and talent make his stories exciting, believable, and just plain unputdownable.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough reelection. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. (This story is true; I repeat, Dan Brown's research is very, very good.) The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. I had read both "Angels & Demons" and "The Da Vinci Code," and found this novel to be a welcome departure from religion. Brown focuses on government conspiracies and scientific misinformation, and it's just as good of a story. I do think that the first 100 pages are very slow. I remember reading up to that point and thinking "oh, that's what this book is about." After the first 100 pages, the story picks up and becomes a suspenseful thrill-ride through the ice and snow. In the end, this was a great book that I recommend to anyone who enjoys Dan Brown books, or anyone who enjoys a good story! There are plenty of memorable moments, over-the-top action, and intrigue.

I bought this book as a gift for someone and then ended up reading it myself before they did. The hardback edition was great; the cover has held up remarkably well. I've thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Rachel Sexton is called to the arctic where she and some scientists make more discoveries that could threaten their lives. Meanwhile, Rachel's father, Senator Sexton, is running for president on the platform of privatizing the space industry. His assistant soon finds out not all is as it seems with his campaign. Can the truth be found out in time?

Suspenseful from the beginning. Some great twists.

Couldn't put it down!

Dan Brown did not disappoint with Deception Point! His knowledge is vast and impressive. This book is not as "symbolic" as Angels and Demons or The Da Vinchi Code, rather Brown intrigues us with his knowledge of scientific innovation. Deception Point is based on the (fictional) political scandal of the century! The Presidential hopeful uses NASA's failures to launch his campaign while the current President firmly stands behind NASA regardless of their past failures. Then NASA reveals the biggest news in the history of science, but did they make a mistake? The presidential hopeful's daughter, who already works for the President of the USA gets caught up in the scandal of all scandals and finds herself fighting for her life with no clue who she can trust with a cover-up of this magnitude in process. I loved it and couldn't stop reading late into the night...sometimes early into the morning! Let me know what you thought!

Staying Power is a must-read for students of the history of the Black experience in Britain. Fryer's research is thorough and well-documented, providing scholars with a basis for further examination of this topic. Although much has been written on this topic since the book's original publication in 1984, Fryer's book still seems to be the authoritative text.

About the Author
Yang-Hann Kim is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Engineering (KAIST), where he is also Director of the Center for Noise and Vibration Control (NOVIC). He has been teaching acoustics at undergraduate and graduate levels for more than 20 years. Kim's research interests include sound visualization, active noise/vibration control, sound focusing, structural acoustics and duct acoustics. He has won numerous awards, including the Excellence Award in Technology Teaching from Ministry of Industrial Development, Second Place Award at the Gallery of Acoustics during the 132nd meeting of the ASA, and other awards at KAIST and from Korean acoustical societies. He is an active with various journals and societies, having served on the editorial board of the Journal of Sound and Vibration for 11 years and continuing to serve on the Editorial Board as the Handling editor of the Journal of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing. Kim holds a B.S in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from Seoul National University and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT.

Another great fundamentals text

The author, Yang-Hann Kim, has taught at KAIST (formerly Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) since 1989 and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Acoustics and Vibration from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). The text covers acoustical fundamentals along with detailed analyses of some more complicated acoustical topics, and is recommended for upper-division undergraduate or masters-level graduate students. Detailed information presented at the end of each chapter is expected to serve well as a resource for more advanced students and professionals.

In this text, the author proposes a "three-dimensional understanding" approach to define, explore, and comprehend acoustical fundamentals. These "three dimensions" are not spatial, but conceptual. They represent a coordinate system of understanding that seeks to provide a simpler and more effective route to learning. These three dimensions are as follows: basic acoustic principles, relative acoustic quantities, and relative acoustical scales. The path to comprehension in the text is broken down into five key components that constitute the five chapters. While impedance is not necessarily explored in significantly greater detail than other acoustical fundamental texts, it is emphasized throughout and ties key concepts together very well.

Each of the five chapters is divided into two sections: an overall presentation of the material and an appendix section that provides additional theory, analytical expressions, practical applications, and mathematical derivations. Each chapter includes 12-14 exercise problems, solutions are not provided. Charts, figures, and photos are heavily used in the text and provide key opportunities to enhance comprehension of the material.

Chapter 1 establishes the principles of vibration and 1-D wave propagation. Topics covered include the one-dimensional wave equation, propagation in strings, boundary conditions, reflection and transmission, and forced response. The concept of impedance is explained, along with examples of its influence on wave propagation. Examples of its influence include transmission and reflection of waves between two dissimilar strings and the coupling of wave motion into a string from a forced input. The Chapter 1 appendix discusses 1-D and 2-D damped harmonic oscillators and driving point impedance of bars, beams, membranes, and plates.

Chapter 2 moves from mechanical wave propagation to waves in fluids. The chapter begins with development of the 3-D wave equation with an emphasis on relative acoustic quantities, such as particle velocity and acoustic-level changes in pressure and density. Other acoustical parameters are also introduced, such as energy, intensity, and power. A four-page summary of human physiological mechanisms for hearing is aptly tethered with a discussion of frequency scales and bandwidths, weighting curves, loudness, and spectral decomposition. Impedance characteristics for plane and spherical waves are presented for far-field and near-field conditions. The Chapter 2 appendix presents additional mathematical details for the 3-D wave equation derivation and characteristics of multi-pole sources.

Chapter 3 applies impedance concepts from the previous two chapters to discuss wave behavior at a region of impedance change. Concepts of reflection, transmission, and incidence conditions are applied to a "flat surface of discontinuity." The author does an excellent job of presenting applications of various complexities, including mass law for limp walls, partitions with damping properties, and plates. The Chapter 3 appendix includes additional mathematical details for local reaction and layered transmission and reflection.

Chapter 4 looks at radiation, scattering, and diffraction of acoustic waves. Radiation impedances are defined for a sphere, baffled piston, and vibrating plate. Emphasis is made on how impedance mismatches influence whether or not an incident wave will diffract, scatter, refract, or reflect. Diffraction principles are applied to predicting the transmission loss of a barrier using the Fresnel number. Upward and downward refraction in cases of outdoor sound propagation are also mentioned. The Chapter 4 appendix provides information on directivity, beam patterns, application of the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz Integral Equation, and 27 pages devoted to theoretical approaches to solving barrier diffraction problems.

Chapter 5 describes acoustical characteristics in acoustically-small and acoustically-large closed spaces. For acoustically-large spaces, Sabine's Theory is used and influences of room surface impedance on the acoustic environment are explained. Transitions between the direct, reverberant, and diffuse field are defined along with room modal response and modal density. For acoustically small spaces, the concepts of acoustical compliance and inertance are illustrated by a classic Helmholtz resonator. The Helmholtz resonator components are also described in terms of individual impedances: radiation impedance, neck impedance (inertance), and cavity impedance (compliance). Duct acoustics and horns are also discussed. The Chapter 5 appendix describes surface impedance measurement methods, additional approaches for calculating reverberation time (Eyring, Millington, and Fitzroy), and 12 pages are devoted to the analysis of Helmholtz resonator array panels.

In summary, the text covers all of the topics one would expect to find in a fundamentals text, along with a few pleasant surprises. Frequent tie-ins to impedance and solid relations between acoustical parameters aid in comprehension of the material.

A Brief History ofJoy

• 1930: The United States stock market crashes creating the great depression.
• 1931: Irma Rombauer takes $3,000, the modest legacy her husband leaves at his death, and she self-publishes the first Joy of Cooking. She is 54 years old.
• 1932: Irma tries to sell her book to a commercial publisher, Bobbs-Merrill of Indianapolis, IN, and is rejected.
• 1933: Prohibition is repealed and Adolf Hilter becomes to Chancellor of Germany.
• 1935: Bobbs-Merrill receives another submission of the Joy of Cooking from Irma. This version is not the self-published book but a revision, typed and bound in 15 notebook binders.
• 1936: March 26 is the publication date for the first commercial Joy of Cooking. The first print run is 10,000 copies and the book costs $2.50.
• 1937: The Golden Gate Bridge is completed in San Francisco and Gone with the Wind, a Scribner book, wins the Pulitzer Prize.
• 1939: Bobbs-Merrill publishes Irma Rombauer's book Streamlined Cooking, a cookbook dedicated to convenience foods. The book is not a commercial success.
• 1940: Freeze-drying is invented.
• 1941: Pearl Harbor is attacked and America enters World War II.
• 1943: The bestselling "wartime" edition of Joy of Cooking is published which includes how to creatively deal with the food rationing during World War II.
• 1946: A "post-war" edition is printed with very few changes.
• 1947: The microwave oven is invented.
• 1951: Marion Rombauer Becker joins her mother Irma as co-author of this edition.

• 1997: After a more than a two decade hiatus, the eighth edition of Joy of Cooking is published by Scribner with Ethan, Marion's son, at the helm.

Starred Review. They say mother knows best, but in the case of this classic cooking volume, first published 75 years ago, the adage might be more accurately "mother—and grandmother—know best." For while some previous editions of Joy have embraced passing fads and shunned the earlier versions' old-school charm, this time, the editors (led by Irma's grandson and Marion's son, Ethan) have stayed true to the spirit of the original. Fond of its forebear's quirky phrases ("There is nothing simple about these uncomplicated-looking fungi" or "a pig resembles a saint, in that he is more honored after death than during his lifetime"), the new narrative of Joy is one of, well, joy. Its recipes will prompt readers to bound into the kitchen; their range and depth is such that there really is something for everyone. Enchiladas, sushi, bagel chips, smoked brisket and corn dogs make their first appearance, while ice cream, nut butters and beef fondue return after some time away. The use of "we" throughout the text will reassure those skeptical of, say, preparing game (a section that, incidentally, has been expanded), and the overall feeling of the kitchen as a place of empowerment and enrichment makes this an essential work for all cooks. In recognition of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the publication of Joy of Cooking, a new edition of this classic work appears. For this landmark, the editors have returned to Joy's 1975 edition, rejecting the controversial last edition's perceived foray into 1990s chef-driven fads. This change in editorial viewpoint doesn't necessarily signal a narrower vision. This new Joy acknowledges that American tastes have broadened by including a selection of cocktails and basic introductions to beer and wine. Drink recipes range from unassailably classic libations, such as the martini and Fish House Punch, through the current obsession with tequila-based tipples. Canning and jam and jelly making also reappear, reflecting the ubiquity of urban farmers' markets and a return to a food-preservation technique that avoids energy-consumption issues inherent in freezing. That quintessential emblem of middle American cooking, the casserole, finds restoration. Detailed line drawings that gave Joy's earlier editions their distinctive appearance bestow continuity. Whether or not the simultaneous release of a new line of cookware bearing the Joy of Cooking imprimatur compromises the book's integrity remains to be seen, but a list price of $30 marks it as a bargain for the consumer. a classic: two reasons to get this book

The Joy of Cooking is by now a classic, a Bible of cooking. An encyclopedic tome of procedures, material and recipes. I shall not attempt to cover its many virtues here, but instead I would like to focus on two reasons why you MUST get this book:
LEARNING TO COOK The Joy of Cooking is more than just a recipe book. It's a textbook. As a student, living on my own and having to take my first steps in the kitchen, this book was a life saver -- it taught me how to cook. Other cookbooks are mere collections of recipes: If you follow them carefully, you have a good chance at ending up with something close to what the author intended. But most cookbooks don't teach you anything about preparing food -- they're just recipes -- so you never really understand, for example, how different doughs are made and how they're used for different breads and pastries, or what kinds of fish should be broiled, fried or cooked, etc. The Joy of Cooking teaches you all that, and much more. If you take the time to actually read the descriptions at the start of each chapter, as opposed to just searching for and following a recipe, you will understand how to cook. The importance of this is immense: If you actually understand what your doing, as opposed to simply following directions, you can improvise, invent new recipes, correct any problems/mistakes/errors, etc. You will begin to think like a Chef. I own many cookbooks, but the Joy of Cooking is one of the very few that actually attempts (and does such a wonderful job) teaching you how to cook. You shouldn't miss up on this opportunity. It's very clear, very well-written, and is ideal for those that are taking their first steps in the kitchen.
RARE AND DIFFICULT TO FIND RECIPES While the Joy of Cooking can't contain each and every ethnic food, it is quite encyclopedic nonetheless. Often, I search dosens of cookbooks, surf the internet, ask friends, only to discover that what I'm looking for is already in the Joy of Cooking! I should have consulted it first! Do you realise that the Joy of Cooking will teach you how to make marshmellows, Halwa, Turkish pastry dough (for borekas), candy, and many other not-so-easy-to-find recipes? And all from scratch: Marshmellows are essentially whipped sugar syrup and gelatin. Halva is essentially sugar syrup and raw tehini sauce. Making Turkish pastry dough is an involved process that takes time and precision -- all the steps for which are in the Joy of Cooking. While I have all these recipes in other books as well, I have no other SINGLE book that contains them all. The Joy of Cooking is encyclopedic and diverse, its scope as far as procedures or ethnic foods are concerned is enormous. This should be your first cookbook, and unless you're looking for some really exotic procedures and recipes, it could very well be your only cookbook.

The 'Bible' turned into microwave cliff notes

While I have dozens of cookbooks with exotic recipes, I've always relied on 'Joy' for those basics (like canning, preserving, freezing, substituting) and tips you can't find anywhere else. Sure, the new 'Joy' has discovered the food processor and microwave, but has discarded many of those tried and true basics along the way. If you want to replace your worn out, dog earred old copy, get the regular 'Joy', not the new, 'enhanced' one.

Hardbound versus Spiral bound?

Without going into any long saga, let me just say that if the spiral bound addition had been given to me 23 years ago as a wedding shower gift, it would not be with me here today. The binder does not allow for easy opening of the book, or turning of the pages, and the paper is of inferior quality. It is too thin, too flimsy on the fingers. I do not believe it will last. I just purchased this version for my 19 year old collage student, and want to return it for the hard bound edition. There will always be those who don't approve of change. If some things have been omitted and replaced with others, there are always reasons for such changes even it we don't agree with them. My copy(hardbound) is 23 years old and still going strong. All of my kid's pick it up when they cook, without my influence at all. It is the most important cooking manual on my shelf, and I own hundred's of cookbooks. If the general layout and feeling remain the same, I would only recommend the spiral addition with the proper changes.

I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense

I am not a person who is reading personality horoscopes in bulk, predictions, match making and etc. Though I have read “Secret of the Serpent Bloodline” and I decided to buy this book too, just out of curiosity. There is a lot of sense in it. I was surprised to find my personality there and that is very cool because it all makes sense, actually you can see why you have problems with other people and get along well with the others (it is very clear how to alter the situation), or why you like or dislike different food. You have done it again Tau Tia! Thank you.

You can find your personality by your blood type but also others personalities. As I know most of my friend's and family blood type now it is easy not only to understand their personalities but also to predict their attitude. It is amazing and useful. I was surprised by just how accurate the book is, I mainly only bought it because I enjoyed Tau Tia's other book so much and now I am glad I got it. A very good investment.

Ideas and concepts in sedimentology are changing rapidly, but field work and data collection remain the basis of the science. This book is intended as a guide to the recognition and description of sedimentary rocks in the field. It aims to help students and professional geologists know what to observe and record, and how best to interpret this data. The emphasis is on illustrating the principal types of sedimentary rocks, which is accomplished through more than 450 color photos and explanatory drawings. The introductory chapter defines the main types of sedimentary rocks, their classification, and their economic significance. The author then goes on to describe standard field techniques and provides a comprehensive summary of the principal characteristics of sedimentary rocks. Additional chapters cover each of the main rock types and describe how to interpret rocks and their features in terms of depositional environments.

This book is an ideal field companion for undergraduate and graduate students of geology, environmental sciences, hydrogeology, oceanography, and more. Professionals in petroleum geology and resource management, as well as budding geologists, will also find this to be an indispensable reference.

Packed with beautiful color photos. Great field resource

Haven't taken it out in the field, although it's obviously an excellent resource for the amateur or professional geologist. I like the layout of this edition rather than the 2011 edition by Tucker. The chapters are organized by sedimentary rock type in this edition by Stow, which makes it easy to quickly look things up, e.g. the name of that crinkly carbonate texture while standing at the outcrop.
The book arrived in new condition, as described. I will not forget to put this in the bag next time I'm out in the field.

Very very good book

I'm really happy that I purchased this book. It has just about all the info you need when on the field and looking at outcrops. Its a good refresher as well since it outlines and describes the basic properties and characteristics of the rocks . Its small enough to fit in my handbag so I can take it around and recap while waiting in line or at the hairdresser. I would recommend this book to anyone who is a geology enthusiast or geologists who work in the industry or on the field. Enjoy

Great Little Guide

This book was recommended to me by a professor, and I'm so glad I decided to purchase it. It's nice and small enough to be carried around in the field, and works as an amazing reference book with great printing and is in beautiful color (which, if you've tried to identify what flute casts look like in a crappy black and white picture, you know what I mean).

Ho Hum

There is little to be said for such a cliche-ridden plot filled with stereotypical characters. The plot is hard to follow. It changes speakers and points of view suddenly and without warning. Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald were an item when they were in the New York police academy and find themselves partnered for a special ops project in a unit, NYPD Red, dedicated to protecting the rich and famous. Of course, that relationship creates problems even though Kylie is married, it so happens, to a Hollywood golden boy and that they are tasked with keeping visiting Hollywood royalty safe. Things go wrong as the bodies start dropping and dropping and dropping... It seems that a Hollywood reject has decided to exact revent in several creative ways and leads the NYPD on a merry chase, each murder getting more horrendous, until the ultimate victim's number comes up.

Jordan and MacDonald can't escape their previous relationship, and they can't follow department rules. They make them up as they go along. What they get away with would get any other law enforcement officer fired and probably arrested. It's Mr. Toad's wild ride for the reader, who has to hold on with both hands and try to keep up with the disfunctional plot and constant changes in points of view, while keeping track of the emotional roller coaster Jordan and MacDonald ride through it all. If what you want is escapism, simply keeping up with this would guarantee a trip to another reality. If you are looking for a good plot with three dimensional characters who interact with some degree of normality, this is not the book for you.

POSSIBLY THE BEST ONE YET

A little love, a little hate, a little conniving, a lot of murder, lies, deception, and police work go into making this the best NYPD Red book so far. It's great when you know the primary characters, know what good cops they are, and how well they work together, but still have to figure how who the villains are.

James Patterson does an excellent job of keeping McDonald and Jordan "just partners" when there's obviously more below the surface and in their past. He writes a great story that keeps you guessing as to who the culprit is and the why. He's also able to add a couple of short side stories in without making everything seem jumbled and mixed up. It's easy keeping up with everyone and everything going on.

I highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next NYPD Red.

A page turner at the very least

James Patterson's "NYPD Red" is the story of a special task force of the New York Police Department that looks out for the A-Listers who come to the city. Movie actors, producers, directors and other celebrities who need a bit of special protection are their assignments. Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie Macdonald have their work cut out for them as partners when New York hosts "Hollywood on the Hudson" where beautiful actresses arrive on the red carpet along with TV and movie-making people who are famous around the world. There are showings of movies, interviews and all that viewers and attendees want to see. New York City is in the process of trying to recruit some of the entertainment business to their city from Los Angeles where most of it resides. NYC would love to lure some of the glitz and glamour for their own.

All goes well until a well-known producer dies during his breakfast. Zach Jordan is the first cop on the scene from the NYPD Red unit and his partner, ex-girlfriend, Kylie Macdonald, is soon on the case, too. They can't afford to make mistakes on cases like this, so they go to work on the investigation. The killing doesn't stop here, though. As they team up and search for a deranged killer who has a plan all his own, it becomes more and more dangerous for those at the event, as well as for Zach and Kylie.

This is a thriller full of suspense and never knowing what will happen next. There is a lot of action and the ending is an edge-of-your-seat finish to a book that doesn't let the reader relax for a minute.

James Patterson has done an excellent job with this one, character-wise and story-wise. The dialogue is good and it is well-paced. Recommended for suspense/thriller/mystery readers.

I'm looking forward to reading NYPD Red 2.
