From Publishers Weekly
Soviet rock music was catalyzed by the Beatles, and many of the first Soviet groups were actually "live jukeboxes" performing the material of Western rock bands as closely as possible to the original. "After the Beatles broke up, hard rock bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath . . . were the provisional favourites among Soviet rock fans," maintains Troitsky, a Soviet rock critic and promoter. Finally, there appeared a band that sang something originalTime Machine. Although there is little in the music itself that differentiates Soviet rock from its Western counterpart, the lyrics reflect the lexical and stylistic heritage of the Russian poetic tradition, explains Troitsky, and the name "bard rock" was coined for Time Machine. In the early years, pre- glastnost , rock was officially and sometimes severely discouraged, existing only underground. The work 'rok' in Russian means bad fate, and "it really seemed that rock music was doomed." But the genre has survived even the suppression elicited by punk rock, and under Gorbachev may yet flourish. The author takes readers on a magical, enlightening tour of Russian rock, offering a tantalizing view of Soviet society as well. Photos.

Rock is alive and well in the USSR!
By Larry Gill
Written by whom I would consider the soviet Dick Clark, Mr Troitsy takes you on a fascinating voyage thru the history of rock musicians in the former USSR. As the other reviewer pointed out, the author was certainly biased, seeing that he often referred to a member of Time Machine in many places thruout the book. He has a well-rounded kmowledge of both the international scene as well as his fellow soviets, and can rel;ate well to American readers poiting out Russian equivalents to our own stars and major acts. In addition to the main text is a photo section providing interesting pics of major soviet music acts, mostly of the 'unofficial' catagory.
Last but not least, this first of a kind guide also ends with a thorough glossary of all notable russian recrding artist's releases by the official "Melodia" record company up to about 1987.
I found the book very informative and absorbing, being a longtime observer of the global music scene, and proud owner of many Soviet lp imports, many of which are described in the book.

Interesting - A bit biased - but a helpful introduction to Russian Rock
By CK Russlitrocks
This book was written during the Gorbachev era, by an author who worked as a sometime critic, band musician, and music promoter. He does acknowledge at one point that he probably is biased in his selection of bands on which to focus. Still, there isn't a lot available in print in English on the subject.

Troistky definitely provides some fun anecdotes (like the band member who had to climb into the performance hall through a second story window because the auditorium was so packed he couldn't get through to the stage)!

If you are interested in Russian rock, this can be a useful guide.

The Leaders We Need: And What Makes Us Follow, by Michael MacCoby

A leader is someone people follow. But why do people follow? Books abound on leaders, but much less is known about followers. In The Leaders We Need, Maccoby steps into this yawning gap in the literature.

This insightful book shows that followers have their own powerful motivations to follow. Many relate to their leader as to some important person from the past—a parent, a sibling, a close friend. With major shifts in family structure and other social changes (especially transformations in technology and work life), these “transferences” have grown complex—making leaders’ work more challenging.

The key for modern-day leaders? Being sensitive to how a group’s collective psychology and social context shape its leadership needs. For example, factory workers in a large city during a period of relative calm would need very different leaders than people working in a star management consultancy during a time of stiffening competition. The author outlines the profound shift from a more bureaucratic society and leadership model to an interactive, collaborative one—and provides crucial advice on how to become a “leader we need.”

Offering provocative psychological insight and thoughtful analysis of social and cultural changes, this book examines leadership through an entirely new lens.

From Publishers Weekly
In an unusual take on America's leadership crisis, Maccoby calls for a new kind of leader: collaborators rather than stern bureaucrats, who are able to attract a new kind of follower. For workers in the information economy who are skeptical of father figures, psychoanalyst Maccoby (Narcissistic Leaders) advocates relationships to bosses that are less parental and more siblinglike. Exploring why people follow different leaders in different times and circumstances, he rests his analysis on Freud's concept of unconscious transference. Though Maccoby's language is straightforward, skeptics will question the book's emphasis on personality: today's workers seem too detached to see their bosses and CEOs as siblings, much less parental figures. The author moves from theory to practice in calling for exceptional leaders to find new sources of clean energy, quality education and universal health care. In a detailed, hands-on chapter, Maccoby brings together leadership, personality types and organizational design to describe how a premier health-care organization should function. But it's his chapter on the president we need—examining personality types and managing styles—that will draw attention. Maccoby makes no endorsement for 2008, but he lays out the flaws of the current president, who, he writes, has taken big gambles without fully understanding the odds or the consequences of failure. A Must Read for Life's Experiences

If you want some insight as to why people follow the leaders that they do
and how the types of leaders we need today are not like the leaders of the
past, read this book. A lot of practical psychological info you can apply
to life.

Significant and practical
By Richard Margolies
We need Michael Maccoby's insights about leaders and our world today to follow or become The Leaders We Need. People don't want to be managed by autocratic father figures, though they will follow and better yet, collaborate with, the right kind of leader. This book is trenchant and practical.

Disclaimer: Michael Maccoby and I have worked together for 35 years. For some this might imply a lack of objectivity. For others, this qualifies a reviewer who knows his subject. You are free to make up your own mind.

Dr. Maccoby's insights are based on over 45 years of research (for example, with Erich Fromm in Mexico), teaching (Harvard, Chicago, Oxford, the Brookings Institution), consulting (IBM, AT&T, World Bank, ABB, etc.), and writing. He facilitated a national health care coalition, and directed a foundation-funded research project on exemplary health care systems. He advises diverse leaders and organizations, being trusted by both corporate and union leaders. He is a fellow of the American Psychological and Anthropological Associations, a psychologist, psychoanalyst, and anthropologist.

The Leaders We Need And What Makes Us Follow provides many examples of leaders and their organizations from this rich body of work. It is his most comprehensive book, giving readers the fruits of his productive lifetime in what might be called a grand integrated theory. His wisdom is useful for those who would lead in any way or at any level of an organization, or for understanding leaders we may choose to follow.

He raises the question why none of the existing authors on leadership give a convincing definition of leadership. Many describe leadership traits, others define their ideal leader. Maccoby's definition of a leader is deceptively simple: a leader is a person others follow.

Since both Hitler and Gandhi were people others followed, Maccoby asks: why and how do people follow a leader? Winston Churchill, a great wartime leader, was rejected by voters both before and after the war. Different contexts require different leaders.

Maccoby understands leaders in their historical context, relationship to followers, and results sought. Personality is also important. The most effective leaders will develop their Personality Intelligence, a combination of conceptual and emotional understanding, head and heart.

At the national level, we need leaders who can respond to a world aflame with fundamentalist ideologies, the global ecological crisis, and an increasing percentage of the world facing inadequate food, water, shelter, health. At the organizational level, we need leaders who can organize and inspire knowledge workers in healthcare organizations, schools, and innovative global companies. Traditional bureaucratic managers who built great corporations and government agencies of the industrial era lack the personality and understanding needed to engage a new social character, raised in dual career families rather than the paternalistic families of the past.

The new interactive social character is composed of free agents motivated by continual learning, teamwork, transparency, participation and above all, meaningful purpose. If led as collaborators they are a source of ideas, energy, and solutions. But they are turned off by rules and carrot and stick-based managers. Maccoby describes the changing attitudes of the interactives who don't idealize father figures; and the various kinds of intelligence needed to lead today.

Maccoby writes that leaders need foresight and systems thinking, and he models it. He describes leaders who are resolving today's challenges: transforming health care; creating schools that educate poor minority students who go on to college; an orphanage run on humanitarian principles where graduates lead the organization in eight countries. Maccoby shows that in the most effective knowledge creating organization, different leadership roles-- strategic, operational, and networking-- work together, and that these roles are best filled by different personality types. In "The President We Need" chapter we gain understanding to help us predict how candidates will act once elected. This book is a significant contribution, useful for would-be leaders and followers.

Well-written and mercifully short introduction to Bootstrap
By Mike
I can code quite decently, but graphic design is not my forte. To be completely honest, I cannot draw a straight line with a ruler. I've done some occasional back-end, but I haven't designed a site in over a decade aside from a blog I did for one of my personal domains using Wordpress and an off-the shelf theme (which I'd recommend if it's satisfactory for your purposes, by the way, Wordpress is a great CMS).

I was going to outsource my business website design since I had already outsourced the logo design with terrific results on fiverr, but honestly I couldn't find a designer that 1) understood what I wanted 2) could understand code sufficiently to realize how the UI/UX and front-end needed to interact with my back-end code, tables, and JSON feeds. 3) could design responsive, scalable and didn't depend on Wordpress/Drupal 4) was within a price range that wasn't borderline insane.

And then I hear about CSS frameworks. I tried it a bit myself, but honestly I was lost. Last I used CSS it was a lot less complicated. So I downloaded a number of books. All the prime free ones are worth about what you pay for them and usually either taken from tutorial sites or riddled with spelling and grammar errors. Many of the other professional retail books (despite several being quite competent) are the size of phone books. I really just need to put up a fairly small site. This book was just right. So far the site design is coming along well and it looks like someone who vaguely understood design put it up thanks to this framework. I'll probably put up my author page using one of the CSS frameworks now, too.

Highly Recommended.

A good book to start with... before diving deeper into Bootstrap
By Stephen Sullivan
It doesn't offer more than the documentation online, but it does break down how Bootstrap works nicely. The content is written to be easily understood, and I would recommend this book for any developer just starting out with this CSS framework.

Root headed out to teach with no compromise, but following a standard of completeness and clarity.
By Anthony P
In another review about a book by the same author, I remarked that reading his books is like chewing sawdust. This basic fact has not changed. However, I now maintain that Bill Root has written the best books on learning the game in all its aspects.

This book is not about plain point ranges as another reader has already claimed; the book is logical, methodical, clear, but there is a catch: this is to be read like a text book; I have taken notes, underlined, and made crib sheets out of it. If you slow down enough your reading speed and do not read it casually like a novel, you will be amptly rewarded.

An example of the terseness of this book is that the headings in this book need to be read and fully understood before reading the respective sections; most of us tend to skip the headings, don't we?

Before I have used this terseness as a con in Root's books, but I have come to realise that this is the best possible format: no distractions, just pure essence.

I am tired of these books that are full of anectodes, pretend to ease you into the point they are trying to make, and then ... KABOOM, here is the point as dry as ever.

Root's books have the guts to be pure bridge, no filler, no gimmicks, JUST EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WITH NO HOLDING BACK OR TRYING TO SPREAD THE INFORMATION OVER SEVERAL BOOKS.

Root headed out to teach with no compromise, but following a standard of completeness and clarity.

It took me quite a time to realise his sense of integrity and charisma, but I did. I am sure that any absolute beginner will initially resist buying his books, but he or she will inexorably gravitate to them and appreciate their wealth of information.

It is this wealth that will make you go through them slowly; the other authors have spoiled you and have put the emphasis on easy reading.

A page by Root is worth easily 20 by the other authors.

5 stars!!!

Bill Root is acknowledged as the country's best bridge teacher, and this book is a clear presentation of the modern methods of Standard American bidding. He makes the study of bridge a pleasure.
The simplified approach will teach you how to value your hand and modify the value as the bidding progresses. Illustrative examples are given on how to handle almost every situation.
1986 Bridge Book of the Year - already regarded as a classic.

Crossing the Continent 1527-1540: The Story of the First African-American Explorer of the American South, by Robert Goodwin

The true story of America's first great explorer and adventurer—an African slave named Esteban Dorantes

Crossing the Continent takes us on an epic journey from Africa to Europe and America as Dr. Robert Goodwin chronicles the incredible adventures of the African slave Esteban Dorantes (1500-1539), the first pioneer from the Old World to explore the entirety of the American south and the first African-born man to die in North America about whom anything is known. Goodwin's groundbreaking research in Spanish archives has led to a radical new interpretation of American history—one in which an African slave emerges as the nation's first great explorer and adventurer.

Nearly three centuries before Lewis and Clark's epic trek to the Pacific coast, Esteban and three Spanish noblemen survived shipwreck, famine, disease, and Native American hostility to make the first crossing of North America in recorded history. Drawing on contemporary accounts and long-lost records, Goodwin recounts the extraordinary story of Esteban's sixteenth-century odyssey, which began in Florida and wound through what is now Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, as far as the Gulf of California. Born in Africa and captured at a young age by slave traders, Esteban was serving his owner, a Spanish captain, when their disastrous sea voyage to the New World nearly claimed his life. Eventually he emerged as the leader of the few survivors of this expedition, guiding them on an extraordinary eight-year march westward to safety.

On the group's return to the Spanish imperial capital at Mexico City, the viceroy appointed Esteban as the military commander of a religious expedition sent to establish a permanent Spanish route into Arizona and New Mexico. But during this new adventure, as Esteban pushed deeper and deeper into the unknown north, Spaniards far to the south began to hear strange rumors of his death at Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico.

Filled with tales of physical endurance, natural calamities, geographical wonders, strange discoveries, and Esteban's almost mystical dealings with Native Americans, Crossing the Continent challenges the traditional telling of our nation's early history, placing an African and his relationship with the Indians he encountered at the heart of a new historical record.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* In the book prepared from his Bampton Lectures in America, Riley-Smith devotes two chapters each to conceptions of crusading in two periods, that of the original Crusades, 1095–1300, and that of imperialism and nationalism in Africa and the Middle East, 1800–2007. In the earlier period, a crusade was, Riley-Smith unequivocally asserts and demonstrates from the theological and historical records, a “penitential war pilgrimage”; that is, it was a military action waged on behalf of God by soldiers who journeyed to the Holy Land and fought to free it from non-Christian rule in penitence for their sins. In the latter period came nineteenth-century attempts to revive the military religious orders of the Crusades, most notably by a French Catholic archbishop for the defense of missionaries and the abolition of slavery in north central Africa. Overlapping that brief, unsuccessful venture and continuing to this day, interpretations of the Crusades by novelist Walter Scott and historian Joseph-Francois Michaud have been employed to facilitate Western rapprochement with Islam and, contrarily, to formulate the historical-economic interpretation of Western-Islamic relations with which Muslim militants justify violent jihad (the Islamic form of crusade, Riley-Smith says). Full of major revelations for most readers, this richly informed little book should be considered essential for understanding crusading, then and now. --Ray Olson

Best depiction of the first transAmerican journey in 1526-1540
By C. Williams
I have known the story of the 4 travelers, since my dad recounted the tales to us as bedtime stories. In college, I took his course in Southwestern Literature (UofAZ)and he took two class periods to tell the story. We had to read "La Relacion" aka "Shipwrecks" which was a popular version told by Cabeza de Vaca himself, who was one of the 4 survivors after a shipwreck on Galveston Island and 4-5 years of slavery to Texas tribes before they crossed the land to Mexico and found Spaniards. In my twenties, I didn't think much about it and took it at face value.

In my 40's I recounted the story to a group of people among whom were African Americans.I was astounded that they didn't know it. I went back to CdeV's telling again and read it carefully. I had always talked up Esteban, because I loved him as a kid. Now I saw that although not mentioned much,Esteban was pivotal to the success of the journey. He was able to learn languages quickly and served as interpreter. He also seemed to fit right in with the native tribes and danced with them, ate with them and lead the way to the shamanism the others learned. It appeared women and children loved him. I scoured La Relacion, then went back to the Uof A and read everybody's ideas about him. No one really seemed to understand what he did- he was the real leader of the crossing and smoothed the way for the 3 Spanish aristocrats who made the journey with him- one of whom was his owner.

I also reached my own conclusion based on spending years as a teenager on the Navajo Reservation and visiting Zuni many times. I was stunned that the Zunis killed him. I could not believe they would act that out of character for the tribal values. I never felt right about the accounts of Esteban's death.

One book in the rare book collection referred to a piece of manuscript that had an alternative version of Esteban's biography. The lost piece of paper cinched it for me. I have also thought it was more than possible, it was probable. I always check every new version of the story and never have seen that reference anywhere again ........

Now that I am 70, I FINALLY found Goodwin's (2008) book and read it with relish. Not only is he the most thorough scholar of the subject, he is a delightful writer. Fresh and clean, not at all pedantic or obtuse. It is some of the best history writing I have ever come across. His scholarship is impeccable, his conjectures highly probable based on the evidence he presents. And he actually included that lost scrap of manuscript!

The book is really a mystery. What happened to Esteban? This is the second book that uses that piece of info, but Goodwin has approached it carefully, circling and laying down his evidence. I love it! I bow to Robert Goodwin!

A Slice of History
By J. Kaye Oldner
Crossing the Continent, by Robert Goodwin, is the story of the first African explorer of the American south. Esteban Dorantes (1500-1539?) was a Spanish slave, and through circumstance and ability, he was chosen to be a military commander of a religious expedition to establish a route into Arizona and New Mexico.

This book is part detective work since slaves in the Spanish empire at that time were not considered to be noteworthy and only through careful reading of the Spanish documents and Indian legends does Esteban's story come to light.

This book is part Goodwin's story on the methods of his research. I found this to be as interesting as Esteban's story. From ancient documents in Seville, Spain to museums in New York and to the Zuni Indians, Robert takes us on his adventure in piecing together the history.

This book is part descriptive. Goodwin has great details on life in Seville, Northern Africa, and Spanish America. What the Texas Indians were like and how they ate in early 1500's are much different than in the accounts in the 1700's. His background explanations of the historians and how books of the time shaped popular opinion bring to life how much has not changed.

This book is all history. Goodwin writes with an easy to read prose that blends in all parts to make is a good, historically accurate, story. I especially like how he puts people's motives in historical context. It makes for a fuller understanding of the story and the times. Crossing the Continent is not a quick read, but rather an enjoyment and wonderment of a slice of history.

Stays with you
By WuMing
Let me say that this is a problematic book. The author has a number of pet theories and tries a bit too hard in places to make the available data--or lack thereof--fit his narrative. The ending, in particular, is mostly wishful thinking. And yet--

I read this book ~5 years ago and it still lingers in my mind.

It gave me a very different understanding of the early years of the European invasion of the Americas, for one thing. I'd read other books on the subject and was aware of both the horrendous treatment of the indigenous population and also that a few Africans accompanied even the earliest expeditions. I was not aware of how deeply rooted African slavery already was in Spain, and how the trading patterns established by both the Moors as well as early Portuguese explorers of Africa would wind up so profoundly affecting the social history of the Americas from the very beginning. I find myself looking at later history, especially in North America, in different ways as a result.

Secondly, Goodwin really enriches the story of Cabeza de Vaca and his fellow travelers. It's an amazing adventure even in its most traditional version (Cabeza de Vaca's own account). Goodwin closely examines that text along with several other contemporary documents, teasing apart their differences and the varying agendas of their authors to bring forward more hidden details that help build out the profile of his hero, the slave Estevan. The resulting reading, built on very interesting scholarship, is an inspiring portrait of adaptability and resilience as embodied by a man who had to start over and establish his value to those around him--all of them alien to him--again and again throughout his life.

As others have noted, the text meanders in between these and other threads, but what I've ultimately taken away from the book definitely outweighs those flaws.

Our Bodies, Our Data: How Companies Make Billions Selling Our Medical Records, by Adam Tanner

How the hidden trade in our sensitive medical information became a multibillion-dollar business, but has done little to improve our health-care outcomes

Hidden to consumers, patient medical data has become a multibillion-dollar worldwide trade industry between our health-care providers, drug companies, and a complex web of middlemen. This great medical-data bazaar sells copies of the prescription you recently filled, your hospital records, insurance claims, blood-test results, and more, stripped of your name but possibly with identifiers such as year of birth, gender, and doctor. As computing grows ever more sophisticated, patient dossiers become increasingly vulnerable to reidentification and the possibility of being targeted by identity thieves or hackers.

Paradoxically, comprehensive electronic files for patient treatment—the reason medical data exists in the first place—remain an elusive goal. Even today, patients or their doctors rarely have easy access to comprehensive records that could improve care. In the evolution of medical data, the instinct for profit has outstripped patient needs. This book tells the human, behind-the-scenes story of how such a system evolved internationally.

It begins with New York advertising man Ludwig Wolfgang Frohlich, who founded IMS Health, the world’s dominant health-data miner, in the 1950s. IMS Health now gathers patient medical data from more than 45 billion transactions annually from 780,000 data feeds in more than 100 countries. Our Bodies, Our Data uncovers some of Frohlich’s hidden past and follows the story of what happened in the following decades. This is both a story about medicine and medical practice, and about big business and maximizing profits, and the places these meet, places most patients would like to believe are off-limits.

Our Bodies, Our Data seeks to spark debate on how we can best balance the promise big data offers to advance medicine and improve lives while preserving the rights and interests of every patient. We, the public, deserve a say in this discussion. After all, it’s our data.

Review
“Tanner is a persistent and experienced researcher...and the information he gleans paints an alarming picture...A thorough report, carefully researched and well-documented, aimed at both general readers and policymakers.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Patient data presents both promise and peril. Important public and private interests hang in the balance as consumers, providers, advocates, industry actors, and governments weigh increased transparency, informed consent, privacy issues, and the right to know. In Our Bodies, Our Data, Adam Tanner tangibly advances a vital conversation—adroitly articulating choices that may profoundly shape the future of health and health care.”
—A. Eugene Washington, M.D., Chancellor for Health Affairs, Duke University, President and CEO, Duke University Health System

“Adam Tanner has thoroughly researched how big pharma continues to trample on our medical privacy. This is a terrifying and strongly-argued account of how drug companies collect, analyze, and sell patient data and a must-read for anyone who has ever been to a doctor.”
—J. Kyle Bass, Chief Investment Officer, Hayman Capital Management

Overly Sensationalist
By Elle
With only seven reviews, I took a chance on the book, because its subject matter is fascinating. That was a bad call. This would have been clearer had the back cover been online. Of the 6 quotes there, only the first two are on this book. Furthermore one of the two is from President Obama. But it is not on the book, just on the topic it covers. The author dramatizes stories and facts and poorly organizes chapters.

In some works a true, but fiction style prosed anecdote illustrates the point, here is reduces his credibility. "A flash on inspiration hit him. He became so excited that he pulled his Ford Expedition to the side of the four-lane highway to think clearly." The author often relies on such narratives to draw your eye away from the lack of numbers and statistics.

Furthermore, he begins the book talking about the sale of anonymized medical data. He goes on about how bad it is, but it's not for 87 pages that he discusses safety of anonomitization.

Ripe for Disruption
By Raj Sharma
Thorough investigative journalism. Really sheds light on the dark alley of medical data brokering. Also gives hope that something can be done. Patient consent, opt-in opt-out registeries, patient awareness, mandates, and laws can prevent medical data trafficking. However, it will require that patients start treating their healthcare data as an asset similar to financial assets. It is not clear how big this market is. Market cap of one or two data brokers gives some idea about the size of this industry. Also, if the individual data is only worth $3-$7, it is hard for patients to treat their medical records as a valuable asset. Nevertheless, it should make all of us furious that someone else is benefiting from selling something that belongs to us and doing so without our knowledge and consent.

Helps along an important conversation on data sharing
By Andrew D. Oram
People have mistrusted what large institutions were doing with their health data for a long time--particularly after records were digitized. Tanner talks about the realities, going back to the 1950s and summarizing where we are today. The book is well-balanced, quoting data miners sympathetically but pointing out also the risks of sharing patient data, even in anonymized form. Actually, there is little evidence either of real harm or of real research benefits from this data sharing. As Tanner says in the conclusion, his goal is to start a conversation--and he has started it already. The book meets this goal well.
