Everyone should read this book

If you don't have an iron overload disorder, you probably know someone who does. And if you carry the gene for it, which is very likely since it is the most common genetic disorder in the world, and you marry someone who also carries it - equally likely - then your child has a good chance of having full blown hemochromatosis. What that will mean is that you will have one heck of a time figuring out what is wrong because most doctors haven't got a clue and even the medical authorities give the exact WRONG advice to a person who may be overloading iron.
For example, many doctors and other medical personnel believe (because they are taught) that anemia is a lack of iron. Not so; there is a widespread type of anemia that is caused by iron overload. Excerpt from the book:
"I grew up in Indiana, where I enjoyed a healthy childhood, with one exception. I was anemic, pale, underweight, easily tired. Anemia is determined by the number, color, size, shape and life span of red blood cells, hemoglobin levels and percentage of hematocrit. Doctors saw the anemic child and prescribed iron. They assumed "iron deficiency anemia."
When I started working in radio and television and I was moving about, I saw physicans in other states. Doctors continued the iron therapy, and when the "run down" condition worsened instead of improving, doctors increased the iron (Trinsicon). Some of the vitamins in the Trinsicon did bring about some temporary improvement. Meanwhile the iron's insidious destruction remained hidden. Clinicians criticize that kind of therapy. They say it clouds the whole picture and makes it almost impossible to assess results. I did and do respond to folic acid and vitamin B12. As it turns out, deficiencies of folic acid and B12 or B6 are specific iron-loading anemias. It was the excess iron that was causing the pallor, weight loss and fatigue."
Sadly, the American Red Cross website says that if one has low hemoglobin, it is due to "low iron levels" and they encourage more iron consumption. One actually needs B6 and B12, not iron.
A recent study shows that deficiencies of folic acid, B6 or B12 are associated with heart attacks. These very same deficiencies result in iron-loading anemia. One shouldn't just take B6 or B12, it is crucial to reduce the iron.
Having noted that hemochromatosis and other iron overload conditions are among the most common in the world, it is also one condition that is simple and easy to fix which may be why it doesn't get any study by pharmaceutical companies: all you do is unload the iron by donating blood. Well, there's more to it than that for some one in a serious condition (and iron overload can kill you quick!) but basically, it amounts to just getting the iron out.

Very Important Book on Iron Overload

I found it really odd that this important book exceeded $100 for a price on Amazon. I purchased this book directly from the publisher at the usual cover price and read it all in one sitting. Now, after reading this book, I endeavor to have my iron levels checked and to see where I am and hope to have my blood decanted as humanly possible.
It's fairly an easy reading for anyone yet very sober and loaded with useful information. This 2001 edition is more expanded (206 pages) than the 1993 edition (172 pages) and it has eight parts with twenty-two chapters in all (and each chapter tries to address each question about the iron overload as fairly possible - this latest was published in 2001, so it may be outdated, but very basic).
I erroneously assumed that the high iron levels are good for you, but apparently, that's not true. At all. Whether or not you have high ferritin levels or not, high iron levels or not, there's always be issues with iron being in a human body. Having a high iron is so common in the population and very often misdiagnosed or even not being diagnosed at all until death, this book will prove that it really pay to know as much as one can about the dangers of iron as much as possible because none of this information would be obtained from one's doctor.
Reading this book will surely force you to look at iron with new eyes. Highly recommended.

This is a great book for learning about iron overload and what it can do to your body. Also how reducing the amount of iron stored in your body can create health benefits beyond what one might think
