Fresh and Sexy

I was pleasantly surprised by the ability of the author to write so vividly and interestingly in so many short stories. Who needs 50 shades when you can turn red faced reading about the escapades of these individuals. Each story was an enticing journey of its own and I'd love to see these short stories turned into cable television episodes. This is a great first work for the genre and I look forward to reading any future installments.

the art of romance

Although I am not an avid romance reader, I was so intrigued with this collection of short stories. The descriptions were so vivid and realistic that I have to admit, some of the stories did raise my temperature a bit. What I really liked about these stories is that they put me back in touch with my own femininity. It showed me that there is an art to romance just waiting to be expressed by us all.

Frustrating

This is a super-good review of the EAR-ONS rapes and killings. It does considerable speculation about EAR-ONS personality and motivation. Most of his ideas about the EAR-ONS are well conceived and appear to have their basis in the author's background in criminology. There is no question that this is a good book if what you want is an introduction to the EAR-ONS history that is accurate and informed, doing away with myths and misinformation. Getting an accurate record of the EAR-ONS is not easy to do, so the author is to be praised for doing the detailed research and putting it forward for the public.

But .... two things would have made this a much better book. One of them was in the author's control, the other may not be:

1) I would have liked a summary LIST of facts that are known about the EAR-ONS, and another summary list of beliefs about him that fall into the "probable" category. An example of a fact: guns that EAR-ONS was known to have used in his crimes. An example of a probable belief: The EAR-ONS may have been a student at American River College. These lists would have been helpful in allowing the reader to try to draw his or her own conclusions about the identity of the EAR-ONS, and without knowing anything much about forensic science, I speculate that law enforcement does something like this too. The lists could have been an appendix or they could have been incorporated into the body of the book with separate chapters devoted to them.

2) I would have liked visual exhibits, where they have been made available to the public and if possible some explanation of what these exhibits were and where they were derived. For example, there are some artist sketches based on witness descriptions of the EAR-ONS. What I would like to know is what law enforcement agency created these drawings? Based on what witness testimony? What year were the drawings done? Admittedly they are very different sketches. It is impossible to say what sketch is more accurate, but it would help to link them to a place, a date, and possibly certain witnesses. A hand-drawn map of Goleta attributed to the EAR-ONS has recently been released. Did the author know about this map? I would have liked to see this in the book along with his comments. The author may not have had access to or permission to use these visual exhibits. He may not have been privy to useful details about them either, but they would have added to the factual content of the book.

I did not care for the fictionalized retelling of the EAR-ONS final crimes at the tail end of the book. I didn't think they added anything to the body of knowledge about him. They were creepy but not helpful.

On the whole, in spite of the above criticisms, the author added a great deal to my sketchy understanding of the EAR-ONS. The book started strong. By dividing the EAR-ONS crimes into phases he showed me how the criminal mind evolved and explained the motivations behind his various decisions in a way that was both clear and detailed.

At the risk of giving out a spoiler, here is one thing that the book helped to explain -- something I have long wanted to know: can a sociopath (who has no innate sense of remorse) stop himself from committing his crimes, or is he compelled to keep committing them in search of a bigger and bigger thrill? Jack Gray answers this and gives the reasons and the proof. Good book!

Just finished. Real page turner. Is it just a coincidence that Grays theories seem to have been adopted by law enforcement in their recent Ear Ons information releases? Too bad Gray was not on the case years ago.

Great Read!

I purchased this book hoping that it would do justice to the story of the most prolific serial rapist/murderer in the state of California. The book delivered and I highly recommend it to others. It takes some dramatic license in making the link between the early years of this case, but it never exploits.

For those interested in Microfinance this is a must have for any library. It covers the basics of Microfinance including whose involved and where it is succeeding. It is really more of a reference guide than anything else and is very helpful for those starting out. I found it invaluable for writing papers related to microfinance. If you are going into this field or have an interest in international economics/ international political economy this is a must read.

This book provides a thorough understanding of all concepts necessary in understanding Microfinance - everything from various interest rates to types of software. There are many great examples of organizations around the world and the way they operate. This provides great context to the learning.
My one complaint is that it does not include open-source MIS in its review or discuss the ethical issues with some of the topics discussed.

About the Author

Jacqueline Bauman-Waengler has been a professor for over 25 years. She has presented and published widely regionally, nationally, and internationally in the areas of phonetics/phonology, speech sound disorders in children and adults, and child language. In addition to the Fifth Edition of Articulation and Phonology in Speech Sound Disorders: A Clinical Focus, she has also published Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology: From Concepts to Transcription with Pearson in 2009. She is currently working as a speech/language specialist in Pleasant Valley School District and a consultant for Western Psychological Corporation in Los Angeles, CA.

All that might be overlooked if the text itself were good, but I find it a little hard to ...

This book is extremely cheaply made. The binding is already showing wear after less than 3 months of use. It looks as though they have simply printed an online book because some of the text runs right up to the edges of the pages, and it's not even in color. Pages are thin and highlighter immediately bleeds through. All that might be overlooked if the text itself were good, but I find it a little hard to trust because I have found several typos and factual mistakes in many of the tables and figures. This book will not be a good reference for future as I hardly know if it will survive the semester. Yes I am a broke college student but I would prefer spending more money on a better quality book that will last as a good reference.

wonderful guide to clinical work

One of the best textbooks I have used in my SLP studies. The author writes in an engaging voice that keeps me interested in even the most technical details. Very comprehensive and backed up by lots of research and citations. A solid text that I will keep in my library for years. The tables and case studies that are highlighted helped me to greatly understand the articulatory vs phonological differences.

The looseleaf version is slightly more difficult to use but I appreciated the lower price. I only had the cover page tear off the 3 ring binder so no real issues there.

One of the most thorough books I've used in my program so far. Full of TONS of information on tests, diagnostics, treatment and typical development. Fairly easy to understand. I'm holding onto this for future reference!

A readable verse translation.

This seems to me a much better translation than the one that was current. That one was in prose and eliminated the epic "machinery." This one keeps those important elements of the poem. I myself can't compare this translation with the original, but I can say that it is an enjoyable English poem.

A nationalistic epic beautifully told

The Lusiads is Portugal's national epic. It is a poem depicting the voyage of Vasco da Gama around Africa to India in 1497-98. The author, Luis Vaz de Camoes, made similar journeys as a common sailor barely fifty years later, writing The Lusiads as he went. He first published his poem in 1572, but evidently to no great acclaim as Camoes died in poverty a few years later.

The Lusiads is not only a national epic, but a very nationalistic one. It manages to recount, in glowing terms, all of Portugal's history from Roman times to Camoes's present (using prophesy to relate what was to come after de Gama's voyages). We learn, for example, that one Portuguese warrior is worth at least a dozen Spaniards. Camoes models his work after Odyssey and the Aeneid. The poet's stated purpose is to show that Portugal is a greater empire than Rome, that da Gama was a greater voyager than Odysseus or Aeneas, and (by inference) that Camoes is at least as great a poet as Homer or Virgil. The work suffers from his excess of ambition, and the author's occasional petulant outbursts (italicized in my edition) about his lack of financial success don't help at all.

One of the oddities of the Lusiads is that the classical Roman gods and demigods are major players in what is presented as an epic struggle between Christianity and Islam. Venus is da Gama's special protectoress, while Bacchus sides with the Mohammedans and tries to sabotage the expedition. Camoes thereby makes it all the more obvious that he is donning the mantle of Homer and Virgil. (Nor does he fail to spice up the story with lots of pagan sex.) He is at pains, however, to point out in the poem itself (lest the Inquisition take offense) that he is using the gods of antiquity just as allegories for the forces of nature. Nonetheless, it is rather unsettling to have Vasco da Gama pray humbly to the Christian God for deliverance from a storm, only to have Venus come to his rescue in the next stanza by having her nymphs seduce the minions of Neptune.

Da Gama was the first European to make contact with parts of Africa and Asia. Camoes followed him a few decades later to the same or similar locations. It would be marvelous if he had given us a portrait of these lands and their peoples in the manner of Marco Polo. Unfortunately, he does not, as his focus is on selling the idea of Portugal as Christianity's standard-bearer in the battle against Islam. Still we do see that there were cities and cultures of some substance, not only in India, but also along the east coast of Africa.

The edition of the Lusiads I read is the translation in partially rhymed free verse by Landeg White published by Oxford World's Classics. It is both beautifully rendered and highly readable with excellent supporting material. The Lusiads is no Odyssey or Aeneid, but it is a relatively short and entertaining epic that tells us a bit about Portuguese history and a lot about a poet and a nation trying to live up to the Roman legacy.

The great Portuguese epic

This is a very readble verse translation of the great epic of Portuguese seafaring and exploration, Os Lusiadas. Despite many translations since the seventeenth century, including one by Longfellow, the work is not widely known among Anglophones. The translator supplies good notes and gives the necessary context. The language is sometimes grandiloquent, sometimes learned or colloquial. The poem expresses an almost mystical sense of Portuguese destiny. and exceptionalism. It's a faithful but not literal translation, which can be be helpful if you're also reading the poem in the original; no translation can fully capture Camoens' music and rhythm. But, if you don't read Portuguese, and are curious about the greatest of modern national epics, full of adventure and encounters with the Exotic, history and myth, the present translation is an excellent introduction.

Short and Focused

This is a great intro to OWIN and Katana. While not a reference to the full capabilities of these MS technologies, this provides useful, well focused, examples. The writing is clear and easy to follow -- usually signs the author has a good grasp on his source material. The fact this the only book dedicated to OWIN at this time simply adds to its value (which at the Kindle price it's already an excellent deal). Nicely done!

Good Content. Bad Kindle Formatting.

The content is good, but the formatting in the Kindle edition is *really* shoddy: deeply nested LINQ expressions in Times New Roman with all indentation removed. Trying to decipher the formatting is distracting from understanding the otherwise excellent content.

Descriptive examples and easy to read

Provides basic examples that help you understand the new technology. Easy to read. Got me up and running over a 5 hour flight across the country.
