About the Author

Robert R. Reilly was Senior Advisor for Information Strategy (2002–2006) for the US Secretary of Defense, after which he taught at National Defense University. He was the director of the Voice of America (2001–2002) and served in the White House as a Special Assistant to the President (1983–1985). A graduate of Georgetown University and the Claremont Graduate University, he writes widely on political policy and classical music. His previous book is The Closing of the Muslim Mind: How Intellectual Suicide Created the Modern Islamist Crisis.

This is an incredible book.

I have always felt uneasy about the Gay Rights Movement. It has always seemed disingenuous and illogical to me, but I could never quite explain how - until now. Reilly explains exactly how we got here, and he explains it completely logically, using some brilliant analogies and solid evidence. You do not need to be a Christian to follow his logic, although you do need to believe that things in the universe are ordered for a purpose, and that human beings have rights by virtue of being human. Of course, if you believe the universe is just the result of random chaos and that nothing really matters, then perhaps this book is not for you.

Hard-Hitting

Reilly has written a book on how America is taking part in rationalizing on homosexual behavior and the affect it's having on our society. He takes a unique approach as he is not arguing from Scripture but more from just the natural law tradition, despite his having a deep Catholic faith of his own. The book is very well-researched and goes into the history of what happened and what is going on in the world today as a result.

For Reilly, the problem started with the contraception movement. I can't say I agree for sure because there had to be something else in the background. People can still use birth control and think that sex has an end and just know that it would not be good to have children at the time or perhaps in some cases, physically harmful to a mother. Do some people wrongly use this in order to justify whatever it is that they want to do sexually? Yes. They do. That is not the fault of the tool but of the people so we have to ask "What changed in the people?" I wish I had a clear answer to that, but I don't.

Reilly's book is certainly hard hitting as he goes through homosexual behavior and the affects it has on people and why arguments for it and for redefining marriage fail. If there is a common argument you hear in favor, you will likely see it responded to in this book. Those interested in a history of how we got to where we got will also be pleased to see it.

The version I read did include a statement about the 2015 Supreme Court decision. If that is rationalizing, one wonders what he would say about the transgender movement today. Reilly does say the viewpoint cannot really last and I agree, but what will be the cost of it for going against reality?

Reilly gives a history of what happened in the world of psychology as well that led to homosexuality not being included as a mental disorder. He then shows the effect this is having elsewhere such as what has happened with the Boy Scouts and what has happened with the military as people seek to remove all barriers whatsoever and treat male-male and female-female relationships as equal in every way to male-female relationships. We have now reached the point where homosexual applause is something that we are exporting to the rest of the world.

Reilly's book is hard hitting. I do wish he had said more about no-fault divorce as I think that was the largest hit to the nature of marriage and sadly, it was one Christians allowed to happen easily enough. There are times I do realize divorce could be a necessity, but it should always be seen as a sad one. If you want an argument besides "The Bible says" this book is right up your alley and worth reading.

A Must Read

This book boldly dares to go where few others will. The author begins with a discussion of the philosophy of teleology, and the dangers associated with living in an "unreality" where things (all things!) are said to be purposeless and directionless. He then discusses the biological revolt against behaviors that deny the teleological reality of the human body and psyche. This section, in particular, is hugely politically incorrect but utterly essential. The book then surveys the homosexual agenda's march through the courts, psychiatry, schools, the military, the Boyscouts, and US foreign policy. It is a sad story, and one that we are all caught in the middle of. The author's conclusion is hopeful, but also tempered and essentially apocalyptic when he writes that ultimately, "unreality cannot prevail over reality." The author and publisher are to be commended for, strange as it sounds, standing in defense of reality in the face of a tsunami of rationalization, victimization, and intimidation. May truth yet triumph.

Richard George Adams (born 9 May, 1920) is an English novelist best known as the author of Watership Down.

The Finest Fantasy Yet Written

Don't freak out and spout the Tolkien line.....Mr. Hobbit is still the King and I love his work as much as everyone. However, one on one, Maia transcends any single work of fantasy by any author. The richness of storytelling, the depth of submersion you will slip into this story and the absolute believability of the world Mr. Adams has created is absolutely breathtaking.
I don't believe in giving a synopsis of the story. I'm a book fanatic and pitch my tent in the camp that believes a recommendation is good enough. If I for instance had based my decision of whether or not to read this book on a synopsis of the story....well, I wouldn't have read it. Good God I'm lucky I didn't. Instead I'll ask a question. You of course know the feeling of having just finished a book you enjoyed reading. Well, have you been lucky enough to (rarely, even for book fanatics) experience the `tears in your eyes' joy of having just read a book that you actually feel lucky to have found? I mean those very few times that, having just closed the book after reading the last page, you actually notice a few minutes later that you've been sitting there, in silence, still clutching this thing that's all at once no longer just paper and ink bound by glue? Yeah? Well that almost describes the soul deep satisfaction I feel each and every time I read this book.....and I'm not one that usually ever feels the need to read a book twice no matter how much I enjoyed it.
Go out of your way to find this book. I mean get in your car and scout used book stores. And then once you've found it, buy at least two more. I'm not joking. Always keep two for yourself in case one falls apart (trust me, you'll understand the feeling). That third copy.....share it. Please share it. It's just too damn good not to.

Epic complexity and beauty illuminate this masterpiece

Adams's Maia rivals the "greats" in its ability to create an entire world of believable characters, religions, and politics. The complex world in which the novel's action takes place is breath-taking. The novel actually serves as a prequel to Adams' previous endeavor, Shardik (itself an underrated and beautiful work), but Adams takes his Beklan Empire to new levels of epic sophistication with the introduction of the naive and good-hearted Maia; the grotesque and unforgettable Sencho; the wise and gutsy Occula; and the erotic, ambitious, and evil Fornis. Perhaps the only works of fiction more encompassing and completely original in their creation of an entirely new reality are Frank Herbert's Dune novels; however, Adams work maintains a beauty and sensitivity that is lacking in those science fiction giants. Overall I have to rank Maia as one of my all-time favorite works of fiction. I have read it three times and have to stop myself from picking it up again too soon in order to preserve the rewarding pleasure I receive from reentering Adams amazing world.

An epic story about a slave girl's odyssey in Bekla.

This is an absolutely amazing novel about a beautiful peasant girl, Maia, who is sold into slavery and becomes a concubine in the household of the High Counselor of the Leopard regime. The Leopards are the upper ruling class of the semi-barbaric Beklan empire, an ancient, beautiful, and sometimes deadly city. Along the way, Maia is befriended by Occula, an exotic slave girl, and unwittingly becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the Leopard regime. This book combines political intrigue, a quest for identity, a struggle for freedom, and this remarkable girl's search for her one true love, Zen-Kurel. Richard Adams is a master storyteller, and reading one of his works is like "being woven into a tapestry". His descriptions of the Beklan empire, his intricate plot lines, his attention to detail, and his use of subtle humor, all make this a story worth reading, and one you'll come back to time and again.

In an astonishing novel of epic scope, Bell (Save Me, Joe Louis) follows the lives of a handful of characters from radically different social strata during the period of Haiti's struggle for independence. Nothing about that period was simple. In 1791, when the Caribbean island that native Amerindians called "Hayti" was divided between a Spanish colony in the east and the French colony of Saint Domingue, a slave revolt broke out in the French territory that claimed 12,000 lives in its first months. But the fighting wasn't only between black slaves and white owners; the colony had a Byzantine social structure that recognized 64 different "shades" of mulatto; of the half-million blacks in Saint Domingue, some 30,000 were free mulattos whose political interests often ran contrary to those of the slaves. The country's 40,000 whites were themselves divided over the outcome of the recent revolution in France. During the next 12 years, to increase their power bases, four racial/political groups?white royalists, white republicans, free mulattos and black slaves?formed and dissolved a string of unlikely alliances at a dizzying clip. Bell's principals here include a runaway slave looking for real freedom, the disturbed mistress of a razed sugar plantation and a royalist soldier in the embattled Cap Francais guard. Central to the narrative are Toussaint L'Ouverture, the enigmatic 51-year-old leader of the revolt, and Doctor Antoine Hebert, a Frenchman who shows up in Haiti just before the revolt breaks out. Hebert, who spends time as Toussaint's prisoner, falls for a freed mulatto. Warned by a young married Frenchwomen that "Who marries a black woman becomes black," the physician is appalled, yet heeds the very words he dismisses. Toussaint, too, bears the mark of contradiction. He appears to be a simple, devout man, but he has "learned a way to make his words march in more than one direction." A handful of chapters are set in 1802, when Toussaint is taken across the Atlantic as a prisoner. By omitting the middle of the revolutionary's story (during which he takes over Haiti, names himself governor-general and refuses to declare it independent), Bell astutely indicates that Toussaint, who saw himself as a noble warrior, was in fact motivated by a bizarre and self-defeating concept. By alluding to the end of the revolution only in a beautiful and haunting epilogue, moreover, Bell avoids the sense of victory that mars so many novels about revolution. Here at least, after more than 500 wrenching pages of rapes and massacres and fetuses impaled on pikes, there can be no question of a winner of the battle for Haitian liberation. Surviving it was feat enough. In Bell's hands, the chaos, marked by unspeakable acts of violence, that surrounds these characters somehow elucidates the nobility of even the most craven among them.

As has been the case throughout much of its history, Haiti in the 1790s was racked by violence?the result of an intricate and sometimes brutal system of racial and social classification exacerbated by the upheavals of the French Revolution. Thus, Haiti provides an ideal setting for Bell (Save Me Joe Louis, LJ 5/1/93) to explore his interest in the motivations that all too often propel us to give vent to our baser instincts. The story centers on the bloody beginnings of the rebellion from which Toussaint L'Ouverture, a seemingly docile slave, eventually emerged as the self-proclaimed governor general of the island. Bell has crafted a somewhat complex and violent tale?it opens with a woman being crucified for killing her baby so he would not have to live the life of a slave. Not for the faint-hearted, this work offers a fascinating glimpse into a little-known episode of hemispheric history. One can be glad for the chronology and the glossary Bell includes. Most appropriate for public libraries and academic libraries where Bell's work is popular.

Arise and Weep

This is the kind of book that can make you seem obsessed. Once you enter Bell's world, you're disturbed, excited, and depressed, but you can't stop talking about the book you're in. It's like having a secret that's too heavy to really divulge, but you keep alluding to parts of it, as if you were talking in code. People look at you like you're sort of cracked, but generally they think it will pass. The blood-soaked history of Haiti is cause for despair, but the revolutionary spirit of the 1790's makes you hope in spite of what you know. Toussaint is one of the great heroes of all time, and Bell makes him both human and epic. In this book, you don't develop much emotional connection to him -- that's the province of more fictional characters like Doctor Hebert and Riau -- but you care immensely about his success as a leader. You want him to be as great, as visionary, as Martin Luther King, but he belongs to a different era, a violent one. The backdrop of the French Revolution, with its mixture of rights and terror, is essential to the drama of All Souls' Rising, and most readers will need to read the appendix several times to stay abreast of royalists, Jacobins, and emissaries from the Mother Country. Some knowledge of American history might help --Jefferson, for instance, opposed the Haitian slave revolt because he feared something similar in the US which would deprive him of slaves plus the boost he got from the 3/5 compromise which gave white planters more votes, while Adams and Pickering favored emancipation and liberation -- but you can follow the essential plot without historical annotation. It's the kind of gravy that lifts the book to a higher level, but readers looking for love, betrayal, courage, devotion, cruelty, sex, and perverse logic will be sated. Contemporary maps won't help with many of the locations, but Bell has a map in the second volume of the trilogy, Master of the Crossroads, that helped me get a sense of place. The themes and the style of the book are managed with power and grace. Bell's a hell of a writer, and I believed each of the voices in the narrative. Big books like this sweep you up and carry you away, but this book sweeps the reader into a present time of continuous revolution in Haiti, slaughter in Sudan, disease and unending horror in much of Africa, war in Iraq and Afghanistan, etc. The blood drama of Bell's Haiti gives us a red filter for understanding our own time. At the end of the book, I'm thrilled by the revolutionary possibilities, depressed by the inevitable destruction and failure, and grateful for every moment of compassion and kindness however small. I can't wait to read the next volume.

Ominous, powerful, and exotic

This story of the Haitian revolution is violent and disturbing, but its violence is handled with care and placed in the context of each character's psychology and motivations. The characters are believable, the history seems painstakingly accurate, and the sensory descriptions are rich and vivid. The book leaves you with new, unresolved questions about what race is -- a topic which obsesses many of the characters in the book as well.
An unforgettable read and an important one.

comprehensible and worthwhile

I found this an extremely difficult read: I was 16, knew nothing about Haiti's history, and spoke no French. I took nearly three months to finish reading the book, because every so often I had to take a break from the horrific violence Bell portrays. In the end, however, this novel remains one of the most impressive I have ever read, in terms of the way it really made me think. The depths of terror and violence to which Bell's characters resorted shocked me. But I did not lose sight of the novel's bigger picture. Ultimately, I have little sympathy for the book's reviewers who could not see past the novel's violence and complexity. Five tries to get through the book? Try a Dick and Jane reader, then, and come back in a few years.

About the Author
Dr. Nagaratnam Sivakugan is Associate Professor and Head of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, James Cook University, Australia. He graduated from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka with First Class Honors, and received his MSCE and Ph.D. from Purdue University, USA. As a Chartered Professional Engineer and Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland, he does substantial consulting work for geotechnical and mining companies throughout Australia and internationally. He is a Fellow of Engineers Australia. Dr. Sivakugan has published more than 50 scientific and technical papers in refereed international journals, and 50 more in refereed international conference proceedings.

Dr. Braja M. Das, Professor and Dean Emeritus, California State University, Sacramento, is presently a Geotechnical Consulting Engineer in the State of Nevada. He earned his M.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa and Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and is a registered professional engineer. He is the author of best-selling geotechnical engineering texts and reference books including Principles of Geotechnical Engineering, Principles of Foundation Engineering, Fundamentals of Geotechnical Engineering, and Introduction to Geotechnical Engineering. Dr. Das has served on the editorial boards of several international journals and is currently the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. He has authored more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering.

Review of the book Geotechnical Engineering by Sivakugan and Das

This book is intended for undergraduate students and it does an excellent job of presenting the concepts and worked examples. This book is written well and it is easy to read for undergraduate students to study the concepts and reinforce their understanding of the concepts through worked examples. The book uses a lot of graphics to explain the concepts and presents the derivation of all necessary equations in a simpler way. Sections on foundation engineering are particularly done well. This book covers more topics than normally taught to undergraduates in US schools. I taught a graduate course in a major university in NJ recently and I found that sections on earth retaining structures and slope stability are very useful for graduate students as well. As a practicing engineer, I find this book a convenient reference to look at long forgotten concepts and equations! Even though this book is not intended for graduate students, I suggest the authors enhance the book by presenting more heavy duty discussion of concepts by referencing extensive research performed on many areas of geotechnical engineering.

About the Author
Frank J. Fabozzi, PhD, CFA, CPA, is the Frederick Frank Adjunct Professor of Finance at Yale University's School of Management and a Fellow of the International Center for Finance. Prior to joining the Yale faculty, Fabozzi was a visiting professor of finance in the Sloan School at MIT. He is the Editor of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Lionel Martellini, PhD, is Professor of Finance at EDHEC Graduate School of Business in France and the Scientific Director of EDHEC Risk and Asset Management Research Centre. A former member of the faculty at the Marshall School of Business, University of Southern California, he holds Master's Degrees in Business Administration, Economics, Statistics, and Mathematics, as well as a PhD in Finance from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley.

Philippe Priaulet, PHD, is the Head of Global Strategy at Natexis Banques Populaires. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the Université of Evry Val d'Essonne. He holds Master's Degrees in Business Administration and Mathematics as well as a PhD in Financial Economics from the Université Paris IX Dauphine.
