Chapters 2-5 provide a review of the basic principles and tools of organic chemistry with a focus on those reaction types necessary for synthesis, while chapter 6 describes stereochemistry and conformation as applied to organic synthesis. Chapter 10 provides a novel approach to teaching synthesis. Coming after the student has had some introduction to synthesis processes and developed some tools (Chapters 8-9), it provides the student with an overview of the various strategies and ways of doing syntheses, rather than have the student simply read or work through a list of synthesis after synthesis. Chapter 14 contains several total syntheses done by students, along with instructor commentary, as examples of approaches and potential pitfalls. Approximately 40 class-tested and evaluated homework problems accompany each chapter, many with references in the literature to actual experiments.

If you buy the 1994 edition be sure to download from the author the hundreds of corrections. There are still many more that he does not list. In spite of this I find it is a very useful book, particularly the portions dealing with organoboranes, oxidation and reductions.

This book is second only to March

It's amazing to me that Smith is able to gather so many resources and consolidate them into one place. Everything is there. Reagents. Cross references to books that deal only in reagents, and so on and so on.
Often, one sees textbooks that give reactions and simply assume that they will work without citing a reference where someone has actually gone through the trouble to see if the reaction really will work. (This, I have found, is the quickest way to waste time in the lab. The easier it is to locate a protocol, the higher your lab productivity is.)
It's also good to see that he's taken the time and trouble to whittle away some of the pretty colors that a lot of books put in in order to try to draw the reader's attention away from the glaring lack of substance.
This book may, in the next few years, supercede the March text because a good number of his references are from within the past 5 years (50%, I believe), and it is such that if you are working in the lab and need to find *that* particular reference, then you can easily go and look it up.

An excellent advanced text.

The 2/e is a comprehensive look at modern methods in organic synthesis.
Smith avoids the trend, common in many books, of using too many colors and myriad worthless illustrations. He instead provides a clean, easy to read volume for the advanced undergraduate or graduate organic student.
The references at the end of each chapter are outstanding. There are often in excess of 75 citations per chapter, readily allowing further study.
I would like to respond to the criticism of some reviewers regarding typographical errors. The 2/e does seem to be much better than the 1/e in this regard. Also the author maintains a well documented list of typos on his website.
All in all, this book is easily the rival of Carey & Sundberg's Part B and well worth the investment for any organic/pharm chemists out there.

Wow! Worth reading for the ideas and many practical hints.

I went through all the reviews and some of them are critical of this book because CDs don't yield 8% in current conditions, people don't have $500K to retire, people have kids and so on. I feel that the criticisms are unjustified.

I read the book in one session and it confirms many of the things I have come to realize albeit at a much older age (yet much before the 'normal' retirement age.) One major difference is that because of my limited financial resources, I have decided to live off my savings (and social security when they become available) income and not just the interest on savings. This way I can retire very comfortably.

Not everyone will be able to retire at 35. Obviously not the physician who at age 35 just got out of residency with $250K in debt. Or somebody working at retail getting paid $10 an hour or so. But prudent saving and post-retirement frugal living will let people retire at 40, 45, 50, 55, or 60.

Paul is a pioneer and I have my respect for him.

Good basic tips.

A very readable book and a very approachable strategy. In a nutshell, the goal here is to realize that you want to retire, and figure out what you need to do to get there. The approach is very practical, reduce your consumption to under $50 per day and when you have enough capital to yield you interest in excess of $50 per day, then you can retire. The details in the book are at this point somewhat dated, you can check your favorite bank or money website to try to find a CD that will yield 8%, and the anecdotes about air travel are quaint, but the premise is sound. I think one of the most important tips in the book is that the change, from working world to retirement world, will be difficult to manage so don't rush it and don't try to take on too much change.

Fifteen Years Later, He's Still Retired

This book, along with Your Money or Your Life, changed our lives. By following the advice outlined in these two books, we were able to quit our jobs in our forties and pursue other interests. We have been free of the daily grind for over four years now, thanks in part to Paul Terhorst, Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez (authors of YMOYL).
In a conversational style, Terhorst explains how he realized his job was sapping the life out of him, and how he used his skills as an accountant to devise a plan that would enable him to retire at 39 years of age. Unfortunately, the specific financial advice he gives (invest in high-yield certificates of deposit) is no longer possible. But number-crunching is not the most important message that Terhorst has.
Cashing in on the American Dream advocates a no-nonsense approach to determining just what you want in life. Do you want to be free of working for others? Then it might mean giving up your car and dinners out. But it doesn't have to mean giving up what you really love (or need). Terhorst and his wife, Vicki, have been retired almost twenty years now and have spent much of it traveling the world. They have health insurance abroad, because it's cheaper than U.S. insurance, and better.
The Terhorsts have their own website and I like to check in on them once or twice a year. The fact that they have made their plan work all these years is more important than any advice they have. Cashing in on The American Dream is an inspiring book. If they could do it, why can't you?

A nice group of websites for business.

The web is so vast that it is nearly impossible to find some of the most useful sites, but somehow this book will point you to quite a few. It is a well formatted and easy to navigate little gem of a book that will have you saying why didn't I know about this site sooner? I downloaded the sample before I bought the book because I really had my doubts as to how good these links would be, but I was hooked and had to purchase it immediately. The author knows his stuff and these sites are not only useful, time saving, and easy to use; but some are entertaining and mostly every one was free (some had upgrade services). A superb purchase for business or even pleasure (if you are a bit on the geeky side). :) One of the best Kindle purchases I have made.

Model Steam Engines

This is one of the better Model Engineering books that I have read. The author gives clear instructions on building oscillating steam engines and boilers from the very simple to the more complicated. Clear drawings and instructions are given for each model, although there are a few errors in the drawings, they are not too hard to work around. Each model has two sets of drawings, one with dimensions in the metric system and the other with Imperial dimensions. I can highly reccomend this book to anyone who wishes to build their first model engine and boiler.

You need a lathe

I'm happy with this book, but I thought it was about building simple steam engines without machine shop tools. You need a lathe for all but the first project. the skills needed are fairly simple, but unless you have a metal lathe, you will not be able to build anything in this book.

Clear and simple instructions for model steam engines

Using clear instructions, without overly technical language, this well illustrated book provides excellent guidance for making small oscillating steam engines. Some can be made with basic tools - drill, vise, square and scribe. And by separating engine, boiler and burner designs you can mix and match to suit your own creative ideas. It is also good for those who just want a better understanding of how steam engines work. I recommend this book highly.
