It's an explosive book - if it is the truth...

The book offers Lena Pepitone's personal account as Marilyn's seamstress and special confidante. Offers information on the last 6 years of her life, including her marriage to Arthur Miller, the making of Some Like It Hot, a notorious affair with Yves Montand,her addiction to sleeping pills and alcohol, and her early expieriences as a struggling actress. The book is shocking with specific details about Marilyn's lack of personal hygenine and love of nudity. It also suggests that Marilyn gave birth to a child, but gave it up for adoption? I liked the book for its specific details and experiences with the goddess. It's a shocker, but you will often find yourself wondering if Ms.Pepitone is telling the truth or embellishing the truth for money-making purposes.Check it out for yourself.

A memoir of Marilyn from a maid's POV

When first released, "Marilyn Monroe Confidential" was widely and, IMO, unfairly criticized for passing mentions of MM's habits. However, taken as a whole, the book is warm and sympathetic and it is evident Lena Pepitone thinks of MM as a good person. Still, it is a maid's eye view and as the old saying goes, "No man is a hero to his valet." If Pepitone is telling the truth, MM frequently went without showers, baths, and -- in private -- clothes and lacked the usual embarressment connected with burping and breaking wind. Seen in context, these are minor personal flaws in a woman who was good-hearted, generous, and kind.

Beautiful star's desire to be average

This book, written by Marilyn Monroe's seamstress/maid, who spent almost every waking hour with the star during the last six years of her life, is a true find. To find out that Marilyn was a "bastard" child whose mother abandoned her was astonishing. It makes you wonder what the world of entertainment would be like had that mother aborted the child instead of given birth to Marilyn! "I was a mistake," Marilyn tells Lena. "My mother didn't want to have me." THAT's a push for pro-lifers if I ever heard one. (And I've always been pro-choice, although I could never personally have an abortion). Interesting in this book is that Marilyn had a son when she was 15, and no one in Hollywood or anywhere ever tried to track him down. Marilyn didn't want to, Lena says, because she felt he already had his life and she didn't want to "disrupt it." Marilyn had such a low opinion of herself. She didn't see herself as beautiful and voluptuous. She saw herself as fat. She struggled with weight throughout her life -- in fact, Lena found herself many times having to "let out" dresses so they would still fit Marilyn, who ate when she was depressed. Marilyn Monroe fits the perfect image of the compulsive overeater, who might have benefited from such programs as Overeaters Anonymous, if they were around at the time.
Marilyn constantly told Lena she was jealous of the poor maid's "normal" life, a good husband, beautiful young children. Marilyn admitted that she got to modeling and then acting the old-fashioned way -- prostitution. "Singers, actors, prostitutes. What's the difference? It's all rotten."
While Marilyn Monroe was making so much money just being beautiful and funny in movies, what she really wanted was to be taken seriously. She just could never get serious roles.
Her political attachments to people such as Frank Sinatra and the Kennedy boys (JFK and Bobbie) led some actors, such as Tony Curtis, to make the comment: "Kissing her was like kissing Hitler."
Lena tells all, in a very fast-reading way. One interesting note is that Marilyn liked to hang around her apartment absolutely nude. And when she went anywhere -- she never wore a bra and panties. This led to a hilarious remark by Marilyn about how much more shocking that famous photo of her in a movie standing over a vent that blows her white dress up and shows her panties would have been had she been dressed normally!
Marilyn's death was a true shocker to Lena, which makes other researchers' belief that Marilyn was murdered ring true. Lena had seen Marilyn take her plethora of sleeping pills with alcohol, etc. Lena had been there when Marilyn almost overdosed in a desperation to sleep. But at the time of her death, Marilyn was happy, not having to use medication to sleep and was going strong in her career. Anyone interested in Marilyn Monroe should find this book, as it's priceless!

Disappointed

I had this book on backorder for three months, eagerly anticipating new ideas, new methods of testing, and more. Having been in the electric motor industry, from being a motor repair journeyman in the US Navy to in-depth research into motor repair and testing at universities and for utilities, for about 20 years, I have seen major changes to the industry since the early 1980's.
The information in the book is the same old thing in a new cover. I see no difference between this book, previous books by the author, and my early 1950's copy of "Preventive Maintenance of Electrical Equipment" by Charles L Hubert. Basically, the book would make a great history lesson on testing from the early 1900's, while lacking in new test options that have come out over the past 25 years.
There are quite a few technical issues with the book. For instance, surge testing is related as an 'inductance-based test' which is incorrect. It is actually an impedance-based test.
While new instruments have been available for the past 25 years, that are affordable, none of those technologies are mentioned. And in one area, the author offers his opinions on new technologies and what they detect, but does not provide information to allow the reader or student to make their own decisions. For instance: "Uneven air gap - a test claim - can't be detected from the three leads of a three phase motor. (Although it isn't desirable, an uneven air gap won't destroy a motor's winding.)" - Whereas, air gap problems are detected by inductance, and impedance, because of changes to the electrical circuit (this author cannot change the laws of physics), and, while it has a minimal effect on the windings, it has a pronounced effect on the mechanics of the motor, which is why air gap is important when assembling motors, and when troubleshooting with vibration (eccentric rotor).
I am, to put it mildly, disappointed.

Komitas is the skilful artist-priest who tours the remote villages in his homeland, collecting and transcribing folk songs. His long, scrupulous research work as an ethnomusicologist enables him to trace the pre-Christian roots of Armenian sacred music, and bring its folk music to a high standard. Although he is a celebrity musician and his lectures and songs are widely acclaimed, his secular performances of sacred music in his homeland and abroad put him on a collision course with the conservative clergy of his church, opening the gates of hell upon him. On the night of 24 April 1915 – known as Red Sunday – Komitas is arrested along with 200 Armenian intellectuals and community leaders and deported far inland by the Ottoman government as a prelude to a premeditated plan to annihilate the Armenian population of Anatolia. Though he is among the few who are reprieved, the terrible nightmare he has experienced, from which he never mentally recovers, takes him into asylums, where he spends the last twenty years of his life in seclusion, his complex inner world governed by the ineradicable images of his past. This compelling book, based on concrete facts and events and written in commemoration of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, serves to make past periods and people come alive in an entertaining dialogue.

About the Author
Serge Momjian studied journalism in London and then attended a degree course in fiction writing. Since then he has worked as a reporter, covering arts and culture for major publications, including Beirut's Daily Star newspaper and London's Events news magazine. He devoted his time to writing novels by the time he reached his forties. His works include Conflicting Motives, The Invisible Line, The Singer of the Opera and Memories of the Past, all published in London. During his literary career his innovative writings have brought him praise and a good reputation. Komitas, The Artist and The Martyr is written in commemoration of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide. This is a powerful account of one of Armenia's greatest musical minds, and the tragic life he led. Singing from a very young age, and having felt the pain of loss early in life, his story is one of both strength and suffering. This book is a brilliant account of Komitas' life, both detailed and thoroughly researched. The author took the time to gather all the facts, and it shows in this book, going from Komitas' birth all the way to death, the story is well told, and a great resource for anyone interested in musical history, or Armenian history, as well as those who enjoy reading of important people, and passionate artists throughout history.

About the Author
Cees Oomens is Associate Professor in Biomechanics and Continuum Mechanics at the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. He has lectured on many different courses ranging from basic courses in continuum mechanics at a Bachelor level, to courses on mechanical properties of materials and advanced courses in computational modelling at Masters and post graduate level. His current research focuses on damage and adaptation of soft biological tissues, with emphasis on skeletal muscle tissue and skin. Marcel Brekelmans is Associate Professor in Continuum Mechanics at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Since 1998 he has also lectured in the Biomedical Engineering Faculty at the University; here his teaching addresses continuum mechanics, basic level and numerical analysis. He has published a considerable number of papers in well-known journals, and his research interests in continuum mechanics include the modelling of history-dependent material behaviour (plasticity, damage and fracture) in forming processes. Frank Baaijens is Full Professor in Soft Tissue Biomechanics & Tissue Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he has also been a part-time Professor in the Polymer Group of the Division of Computational and Experimental Mechanics since 1990. He is currently Scientific Director of the national research program on BioMedical Materials (BMM), and his research focuses on soft tissue biomechanics and tissue engineering.

Monique Craig is a hoof researcher, farrier, consultant to farriers, rider, author, and founder of EponaTech (www.Metron-Imaging.com) and EponaShoe (www.EponaShoe.com) and the Epona-Institute (www.Epona-Institute.org). She has a BS in Computer Science Engineering, formerly studied art and won sculpture awards, and now gives seminars and lectures on the hoof, trimming, shoeing and equine biomechanics. She has published several papers related to the hoof and soundness, and gives lectures at the college level in hoof biomechanics. A tri-lingual native of Switzerland, she became a US citizen in 2001.

The Science and art of Hoofcare- in a digestible delivery

A Detailed manual for Hoofcare providers- clear, concise diagrams, photos, xrays and descriptions- in layman's terms. The documented case studies are a testament that the Epona System not only has immediate benefits, but long term improvements to soundness and function of the hoof. Alot of information is in this manual- alot of content- delivered in a sequential presentation. This would be a reference text to get in Hardcopy for easy review (pics, xrays) and bookmarks. A LOT of content.

you see over and over again in other books on the hoof. It has helped to sharpen my eye, and
now I'm looking at horse's feet in a new light! Great book!

Top notch hoof care textbook!

I have a range of hoof care textbooks and have to say this is by far the top of the list. I have yet to find a textbook that is as detailed while still engaging and enjoyable to read. My eyes don't glaze over. I'm excited to turn the page and feel that I'm retaining all of the information presented. I've taken courses that present similar information in a 3 to 5-day format but have not received a textbook that goes along with those courses. This is that book! Hats off to Monique Craig. Very happy with this purchase.
