This book will change your life for the better.

I developed severe agoraphobia and panic attacks at age 19, so bad that I had trouble sitting through class, restaurants, movies, church, red lights, driving far and eventually even short drives, interstates, planes. Basically anywhere I had to be for a certain time period. It was terrible, the worst thing I ever experienced. I had nowhere to turn. No one understood. Doctors and counselors didn't really help (although some now have finally use Dr. Weekes's method of face, accept the weird feelings and exposure therapy using face and accept.) Anyway, to make a long story short, Dr. Claire Weekes and her book Simple Effective Treatment of Agoraphobia, enabled me to finally understand what was happening to me (just adrenaline), how to deal with it, how to practice going places I felt I couldn't, and eventually get better and better. It took a while of practicing and using her method, but I have to say I am definitely recovered. This no longer rules my life, at all! I can do anything. It is truly a life-saving book. Get a counselor to help you understand it if you have trouble, but it is absolutely the best way to deal with this debilitating disorder, that can keep you housebound for years. I am now free, completely free. God bless Dr. Weekes for understanding. I think she must have had agoraphobia herself and got over it. The right way.

It's really too bad I didn't have knowledge of this amazing ladies teachings when I was a kid. I have read almost everything from Dale Carnegie to Norman Vincent Peale and then some and had never even heard of these books until the last year. I am certain my life would have been very, very much different and for the better if I had of had access to Claire Weekes materials. It's better late than never though! I actually went out and ate in a restaurant for the first time in I can't remember how long after reading Hope and Help for Your Nerves and after reading this book on Agoraphobia things are even better, although they both use the same techniques, there is a bit more information in this book regarding the subject itself which helps me.

You can buy the book for a little of nothing from the advertised prices if you go second hand shopping here on Amazon.

If you have Agoraphobia and you are unsure if this is for you or not, just buy the book. If you don't like it, you can donate it to a library where it more than likely will help someone else or you can resell it here on Amazon. I would also recommend anything else she has written or recorded. I noticed ONE person out of several complained about Hope and Help for Your Nerves but many many more gave it 5 stars. It helped me as much as this book did and explained things to me in a little more depth regarding nerves, OCD, GAD and other nervous disorders. Good luck and God Bless! =)

I read this book in the seventies and it freed me to live again. Dr. Claire Weekes thoroughly understands the anatomy of anxiety and phobias and knows the process that heals shattered nerves. If you need to be healed of panic attacks, grab a used version of this book. Read every word, and put into practice her guiding steps. It works.

Your child will be top of the class

I'm glad I found this book when my niece was still a baby, now she is a precocious 8 year old who is ahead of her peers, and her IQ test shows she is almost 2 standard deviation above the mean.

The book will not give a full curriculum to follow but many suggestions on how to teach your children maths and language concepts and how to develop their thinking skills so that they can get ahead.
His teaching philosophy (Mr Engelmann strongly believes in nurture) are the opposite of that of government run schools, if only his direct instruction method had been adopted back in the 60's, No Children Left Behind would never have existed.

As the used copies have fetched a ridiculous high price on Amazon and put this book out of reach of families of more modest means, go to Mr engelmann's "zigsite, dot, com", where the author has graciously put an abridged version of this gem on pdf for FREE.

Watch your child blossom

THis is a fantastic book! I have used it in teaching my child to read and in helping him in physical development, etc. I originally found it at a flea market for a dollar and have been his biggest fan! My son is now seven years old and adds fractions with unlike denominators and is learning algebra. He reads on a fourth grade level and is very clever. Engelmann is spot-on when he advocates that you teach children to take a question of their ability to do something as a challenge rather than as a solid truth. There are so many stereotypes and cruel prejudices out there that no child can afford to believe the naysayers. If a child doesn't understand something in school that is a foundation for many later things, they can be typecast as stupid. It's very important to build the confidence of the little ones so that when they face hardship or negativity from others, they have a core sense of their ability to do, learn, and triumph. It should be required reading because he is very plain in stating that a child who has been marked early as slower can be guided along, using this book, to be at a normal (and I would believe higher) comprehension level. He firmly touts nurture over nature and I do too! It is a travesty that children are babytalked and coddled as if they aren't, truly, little people. When they are told the magical truth about our solar system and about the animal kingdom or mechanics, it is as if their little face had before been a tight little bud, but with a little radiant knowledge shone on it, it blossoms into a grateful, awestruck rose. I'm sure a lot of you who homeschool know what I mean. How many times have you explained an adult concept that really opened the world up to your child and they hugged you so hard and planted a loving kiss on your cheek in wordless thanks? It is a beautiful experience that I wish on all.

I think his How To Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons is a better program than Hooked on Phonics because it's very concentrated and comprehensive at the same time. You end up teaching your child his/her abc's, rhyming, reading, and writing the letters--all at the same time and in 100 lessons. What a great idea! I speak more on that book under its review.

I Can't Recommend This Book Highly Enough!

I bought one of the first ones out, in the 60s. It had been advertised as about to be released, so I prepaid so I would get it first thing. I had a three-year-old at the time. He was not talking yet (a genetic thing -- he talks beautifully now) but he struggled to make himself understood -- it was a motor development deficiency.

When I got this book, I immediately began the exercises, followed the suggestions, etc. My son blossomed, and when his baby brother became old enough, he too, learned well and quickly. They could both read as soon as they could talk! They could do math in their heads, they could play chess, as well, of course, as tic-tac-toe. When they went to kindergarten, they were writing, reading at about a second grade level, and were quite creative and artistic. I was amazed and delighted!

They were also ahead of their peers in motor skills and eye-hand coordination (a miracle, since the males in their father's family tended to be about two years behind in motor development!)

I believe firmly that this book allowed my sons to become the geniuses they are -- with IQs in the .003% of the population -- that is one in 333, if my math is correct. I could be wrong. Nevertheless it stood them in good stead in school, then in getting jobs. They are both in computer work,, but in very different areas. I am always amazed at their vocabulary, their ability to articulate, and their understanding of the "guts" of computers, etc.

Like I said, this book is a must, especially if your child has the beginnings of anything that could become a learning disabiity.

Perhaps The First Modern Poet.

Contained in this collection are most if not all of Blake's most essential works,including "The Marriage Of Heaven & Hell";the two songs,"Auguries Of Innocence"; etc..In the creative fertility of this great poet came some of the greatest lines ever written in the English language,or any language for that matter.His conjuring of visions perhaps is the first written document of modern poetry,heralding what is to come.

The prophetic Blake of Zoas, Jerusalem , and the other long -poems has always escaped me.

The Blake of the short memorable lyrics , of the 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' reverberates in my mind.

The Blake of proverb always strikes a strong note.

All the radical ideology ,and the fervor of an upturner of worlds , the solitary angry social critic too has not meant that much to me.

But 'Little Lamb who made thee/Dost thou know who made thee?/

and Tyger/Tyger/ Burning bright in the forest of the night/ these fascinate as only real poetry does.

Dewy Blake

'Dewy Blake', the title of this review, is poking fun at the author's over use of the word dew, meaning precipitation and moisture. Truth be told, I found this collection mostly underwhelming, despite Blake's reputation as a first rank poet.

Of the selections I read - I confess that I skim read much of Jerusalem and the last eighty pages of the book - I think I enjoyed King Edward The Third the most as the short play is full of vigorous turns of phrase and lively exchanges as well as the short story Tiriel which had something of the Greek tradition about it.

Overall, however, I struggled to get a grip with Blake's poetising, unmoved and uninterested in the esoteric, theological and surreal imagery of his work and, for me at least, the rather flimsy philosophical underpinnings of his epigrams and life observations.

Yes, Satan can inspire poetic creation, and so can Jesus and the myriad of obscure names of people and places that litter this collection, but if esotericism divorced from natural law wisdom is all that is on offer, I'm happier reading internet poetry on Tumblr!

I accept that this review entirely reflects my own poetic preferences which dislikes surrealism and fiery imagery in favour of sober and elegant linguistic usage but to my credit I read three quarters of the book closely before giving up on Blake's theological mindscapes which I found, well, boring.

It is very early days in my journey with English poetry but I hope I find authors more congenial to my literary tastes than 'the prophet' William Blake.

Three stars.

FUTURAMA FOREVER!!!

Adventures is the sequel to Futurama-O-Rama and is a compilation of the next 5 comic books: a) Who's Dying to be Gazillionaire?, b) Xmas Time is Fear, c) New Year's Rockin' Evil, d) Planet X-Press Men, and e) Freaky Fry-Day.

Just like Futurama-O-Rama, Futurama Adventures is an OUTSTANDING book; the art, the plots, the writing, the witty humor and the AMAZING characters are all very well thought out and presented!

The spoof on the X-MEN (story #4) is GREAT!

In short, keep them coming!!!

Am I tainted by being a Futurama fan?

I was a Futurama fan from the beginning of this series. I got others involved as fans. And although this series doesn't have the lingering power of the Simpsons, it was entertaining, witty, and rewarding to the fan who learned the nuances of the characters.

With that said, Futurama Adventures was disappointing. And I'm not really sure that I can tell you why! It wasn't "entertaining, witty, and rewarding to the fan who learned the nuances of the characters." It was flat, bland, and not very entertaining.

I think I have been totally contaminated by knowing Futurama as a television series. I compare the printed version to that audio-visual version, and it loses badly. The tone in the voices, the shrugging of Fry's shoulder, the burping of Bender... it is the little things that make these characters "believable" and "adorable." Take them away, and you get flat, bland, etc. I feel the same way about the Simpsons books.

So... thumbs up for Futurama! If you want to know this series and these characters, get the DVDs. You won't get to know Fry by reading this book.

About the Author
Dr. Charles F. Levinthal is Chair of the Department of Psychology and Professor of Psychology at Hofstra University, where he has taught and conducted research since 1971, having received his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Michigan. He is author of fifteen books, including Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society, 7th ed. (2012), Drugs, Society, and Criminal Justice, 3rd ed. (2012), Point/Counterpoint: Opposing Perspectives on Issues of Drug Policy (2003), Introduction to Physiological Psychology, 3rd ed. (1990), and Messengers of Paradise: Opiates and the Brain (1988). Drugs, Behavior, and Modern Society has been published in Korean (2008), and Messengers of the Paradise: Opiates and the Brain has been published in Spanish (1989) and Japanese (1991). His present research interests include issues in substance abuse and dependence, clinical neuropsychology, and cognitive decision-making. Dr. Levinthal presented the Hofstra University Distinguished Faculty Lecture in 1987 and was voted by the graduating Class of 2003 as Distinguished Teacher of the Year. Dr. Levinthal was elected as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association in 2010.

Great Value and Great Text!

I got this book for my undergrad degree. When I first started college, I purchased all my books which got very expensive. I then began renting my texts through the school and other websites. This semester I decided to check Amazon's rental program. I'm soooo glad I did because the prices can't be beat! The text came super fast, unlike the school bookstore which usually sells out of the rentals fairly quick and other sites who inform you the book is backordered after your class starts and after you were already expecting to receive the text, leaving you in a real bind. Amazon had the book to me in a matter of a few days and at a great price. I'm also enjoying the text itself. I find it to be very informative and easy to read. I often get bored with long readings in my classes but this text has really held my interest and I'm eager to move on to read the next chapter. I will definitely be renting all my texts from Amazon hereafter!

Hands on review of textbook.

This text is very user-friendly. It presents information and data in a comprehensible and digestible way. The vocabulary is appropriate to the text, and the diagrams, charts, and other illustrations serve to reinforce the data and are not distracting. I have found this book to present an organized picture of a very chaotic and often confusing topic. I am especially pleased at the ease of comprehension as I am using this book for an on-line class and do not have the benefit of lecture to reinforce concepts. The only drawback to the loose-leaf format of this text is that the pages are thinner and feel "weaker" than those in a traditionally bound book. Otherwise, being able to carry and read only the chapter needed instead of the entire book is a treat.
