not for the solo student.

It's okay, I'm learning french on my own, I don't have an instructor and so far I think I'm doing fine. This book does not offer detail pronunciation of the words, and in many areas it has a head phone icon, for example by the alphabet. It makes sense to be able to hear how some things sound, or see how it is pronounced. Not a book I would recommend for the solo student.

great textbook

i teach french to junior high-high school students privately and this book is a great resource (with its companion workbook). it's different from other books like (bon voyage) in that it introduces verbs much later on (which is better or worse for students w/ different learning styles) and focuses on learning phrases and vocabulary. overall, i would recommend this book (+ to use it with its online resources -- review quizzes and online activities -- and workbook).

About the Author
Thomas A. Garrity is the William R. Kenan, Jr Professor of Mathematics at Williams College, where he was the director of the Williams College Project for Effective Teaching for many years. He has written a number of research papers and has authored or coauthored two other books, All the Mathematics You Missed (But Need to Know for Graduate School) and Algebraic Geometry: A Problem Solving Approach. Among his awards and honors is the MAA Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Award for outstanding college or university teaching.

Uniquely Informative

I used this book for an opposite purpose to the one the author intended. For me it served to review all the math I *had* learned long ago in school (both undergraduate and graduate), but was starting to forget. The author's informal style and rapid-fire delivery were just right for these topics. The subjects I had truly missed, mainly the more abstract parts of algebra and geometry, I found difficult to follow, though I did come away with some feeling for them. This is not a perfect book. The informal style extends to numerous typos in equations, and modern computer-oriented approaches get short shrift. Nevertheless, I found it a unique resource and a pleasure to read.

I Wish I Had Done It

When I was in graduate school, it seemed that my professors were constantly making reference to a theorem or definition that I had never heard of, or that I had forgotten. The professors would usually acknowledge the possibility that their students were unfamiliar with the cited material, but they would say something like, "Oh, you can pick that up anywhere." Determining the "anywhere" was often a frustrating and time-consuming experience. I often thought that "someone" should write a book condensing all that material that I could "pick up anywhere" into one book. And I just discovered that someone has indeed done exactly that.

One can quibble about the choice of topics in this book. Three of the sixteen chapters in the book are devoted to vector calculus leading up to Stokes' Theorem. Five others concentrate on various forms of analysis and differential equations. Personally I think that perhaps some basic results in Number Theory might have been helpful; others may object to the omission of Algebraic Topology, although I don't think there is much material in early graduate school that depends on a knowledge of results or definitions in Algebraic Topology.

I agree with the previous reviewer who suggests that the book would be improved by the inclusion of answers to the exercises, but that omission doesn't upset me as much as it did her/him.

My biggest criticism of the book is that there is a disappointingly large number of typos. Even though this is a first edition, it should have been more carefully proofread. If a second edition is ever issued, I hope that problem will be corrected.

Bird's-eye view of the big picture

A previous reviewer pointed out that this book is meant to organize ones knowledge about math- not supplement for lack of knowledge. I agree. It gives recaps of the main ideas, and helps one to see the big picture about various subfields of math. Of course, NO ONE BOOK could POSSIBLY teach all of those subfields with a significant level of detail. So one should not attempt to use it for that purpose.

I'm a math undergrad, starting my senior year soon. I've been using this book to preview areas of math before taking a class in that area. It's been tremendously helpful to me to have an idea about the big picture and the context before grinding into specifics. I would highly recommend this book for that purpose. I don't know about other purposes, but for that it has been great for me.

The author gives many insights that nobody bothers to tell you in textbooks or in any specific class. For example, in the preface he explains that mathematics on the whole is about sets of certain types of objects and certain types of functions between those objects. This is a major simplification- but that's the point! I applaud Garrity for having the guts to say this, though he makes himself a target for ridicule by making such a gross simplification. Students like me need to hear it. The rest of the book begins each chapter by telling the reader what types of objects are studied in that field of math, and what the functions are that map between said objects.

It's a blurry, bird's-eye view of the big picture. But it motivates me. I have an idea about what to look forward to in a given class. I love this book. I had it out from my university's library for almost an entire year, and then realized I wanted my own copy so I could keep it.

Terrific Suspense - Lovely Romance

Laura Thorsen has a problem. In her quest for a Pulitzer worthy news story, she's made a very dangerous man very, very angry. Now he's after her to stop her from publishing the story. After a near miss when her car is bombed, Laura heads home to the Yukon and her estranged mother. But it's not that easy to get away and Laura has to finally decide who she can trust. Her boss? Her mother's good-looking neighbor? Can she even trust her mother, who has some secrets of her own? And just who are the mysterious men appearing and disappearing in the forest?

I really enjoyed this book. The mysteries are multiple and complex, the suspense tense, the romance between Laura and Mack, the neighbor, hot. But in my opinion the heart of this book is the relationship between Laura and her mother. The longer they are in contact with each other, the more of their past is peeled away and the more they each have to come to terms with the regrets and dreams of what has been. When we finally discover what happened between Laura's mother, father and a friend who vanished 30 years ago, we understand how those decisions impacted all of their lives.

A guide to basic concepts in Astrophysics

This book aims to provide the general reader with an understanding of basic concepts of astrophysics. Each chapter contains a short summary statement about the main idea. It then goes on to exposit this idea at length. It also a relevant quotation in regard to the subject, one which is often entertaining and amusing. It seems to me that it exposits the concepts in a clear and concise way. I cannot however judge this fairly as I am far being an expert on the subject. For me the book was helpful in 'filling out my own personal picture' of the universe, a picture which is based very much on the questions I wish personally to ask. For instance at one point the author talks about the conditions on Earth at first formation the two- hundred million year Hadean period when the 'seas were boiling hot'. I am sure students of Astrophysics learn about this period and understand it in a much deeper way than I . For me it was important in giving material for the understanding and imagination.
I rarely comment on this aspect of a book, but I strongly disliked the format of the book, the hard- solid square heavy 'look'. I would have appreciated a light and easy- to- carry paperback. I will close with a list of topics treated in the book , a list which will probably whet the reader's interest much more than anything I have said in this review.

For the price and quality this publication would make a great gift for the aspiring student or the interested adult

50 Ideas you really need to know Universe by Joanne Baker

I have always had a deep interest in astronomy and own many books on related topics within this science. Nonetheless I am a rank amateur and am always on the look out for a helpful book to update and refresh my knowledge of this fascinating but confusing topic. I have found one that I can recommend without reservation to adults and curious teens who require a brief, concise and easy to understand guide.

The author and publisher refrained from stuffing the book with generic photographs of astronomical topics. Not that I don't admire a Hubble color image or a striking Martian landscape but the intent of this book is to enlighten not dazzle. What we have are 50 astronomical topics discussed in 4 pages each with, simple charts, timelines and many quirky but pertinent quotes from notables. The author covers a wide range of topics from the routine: Sun, Moon, Planets, to the "far out": Fermi paradox, Hubble's law, God particle. I don't believe the author "dumbed down" the text for us laypeople but detailed math concepts are, for the most part avoided.

For the price and quality this publication would make a great gift for the aspiring student or the interested adult.

Excellent for the Beginner, Hobbyist, or Enthusiast of Cosmology; Not meant for the Expert

Despite being only a hobbyist or layperson concerning this topic, I have taken time to read works like Six Easy Pieces, The Cosmic Code, The Inflationary Universe, Death by Blackhole and a translation of Einstein's Relativity papers.

I do not claim to understand everything about those works. I am not an expert or professional in this area at all. I simply mention that I've read these works for context as I now present the following book review.

And to that point: I really enjoyed "50 Ideas You Really Need to Know: Universe" because Joanne Baker gives an excellent overview of many important topics concerning our understanding of the universe. This book has made it easier to soak in other works that are more comprehensive (like the ones just listed above). It's a good book for the average person with a growing interest in cosmology. I wish I had this book years ago-- before I ever attempted to read the a fore mentioned titles.

The ideas in this book are presented succinctly and are also accompanied with brief quotes from important people both famous and obscure. Background information of key people and subtopics are also touched on as side notes for both brevity and enrichment. Each topic also ends with a short phrase to help the reader remember the gist of each idea presented.

The ideas build on each other in a loose chronological fashion and really show how one great discovery paves the way for the next. This continuity of ideas informs us that understanding simply for the sake of it is virtuous and essential; we should never underestimate this fact.

I also noticed this book seemed quite current (at the time I'm writing this review), as the edition I have was published in 2013.

I also love this title because revisiting sections from more in depth cosmology books (like the examples above) became far more fruitful after reading "50 Ideas".

This book has even enriched my understanding of cosmology topics that I thought I already knew a lot about. If this book is a good representation of the rest of the "50 Ideas" series, then I really need to get my hands on some of the other titles.

If you're wanting to get more acquainted with cosmology, I believe this book is a great place to start. I also believe that the fifty ideas presented in this book really do need to be know by as many people as possible. I believe if everyone were exposed to these ideas, our world might become a better place. People would realize how expansive our universe truly is and how we are totally engulfed by it. Our galaxy is but a grain of salt and we are so small. Bu to me, that's all the more reason to take better care in how we live out our lives.

This book will change your life for the better.

I developed severe agoraphobia and panic attacks at age 19, so bad that I had trouble sitting through class, restaurants, movies, church, red lights, driving far and eventually even short drives, interstates, planes. Basically anywhere I had to be for a certain time period. It was terrible, the worst thing I ever experienced. I had nowhere to turn. No one understood. Doctors and counselors didn't really help (although some now have finally use Dr. Weekes's method of face, accept the weird feelings and exposure therapy using face and accept.) Anyway, to make a long story short, Dr. Claire Weekes and her book Simple Effective Treatment of Agoraphobia, enabled me to finally understand what was happening to me (just adrenaline), how to deal with it, how to practice going places I felt I couldn't, and eventually get better and better. It took a while of practicing and using her method, but I have to say I am definitely recovered. This no longer rules my life, at all! I can do anything. It is truly a life-saving book. Get a counselor to help you understand it if you have trouble, but it is absolutely the best way to deal with this debilitating disorder, that can keep you housebound for years. I am now free, completely free. God bless Dr. Weekes for understanding. I think she must have had agoraphobia herself and got over it. The right way.

It's really too bad I didn't have knowledge of this amazing ladies teachings when I was a kid. I have read almost everything from Dale Carnegie to Norman Vincent Peale and then some and had never even heard of these books until the last year. I am certain my life would have been very, very much different and for the better if I had of had access to Claire Weekes materials. It's better late than never though! I actually went out and ate in a restaurant for the first time in I can't remember how long after reading Hope and Help for Your Nerves and after reading this book on Agoraphobia things are even better, although they both use the same techniques, there is a bit more information in this book regarding the subject itself which helps me.

You can buy the book for a little of nothing from the advertised prices if you go second hand shopping here on Amazon.

If you have Agoraphobia and you are unsure if this is for you or not, just buy the book. If you don't like it, you can donate it to a library where it more than likely will help someone else or you can resell it here on Amazon. I would also recommend anything else she has written or recorded. I noticed ONE person out of several complained about Hope and Help for Your Nerves but many many more gave it 5 stars. It helped me as much as this book did and explained things to me in a little more depth regarding nerves, OCD, GAD and other nervous disorders. Good luck and God Bless! =)

Simple and Effect Treatment of Agoraphobia

I read this book in the seventies and it freed me to live again. Dr. Claire Weekes thoroughly understands the anatomy of anxiety and phobias and knows the process that heals shattered nerves. If you need to be healed of panic attacks, grab a used version of this book. Read every word, and put into practice her guiding steps. It works.
