This could be the beginning of a beautiful seminar course

Hyperbolic geometry is mathematics at its best: deep classical roots; stunning intrinsic beauty and conceptual simplicity; diverse and profound applications. In this source book we see how three great masters worked to understand this new and exciting geometry.

First, Beltrami's two 1868 papers. The geodesic geometry of surfaces of constant negative curvature such as the pseudosphere capture much of the essence of hyperbolic geometry. However, one does not find the actual hyperbolic plane lying around in three-space. But Beltrami has a way of mapping a surface of constant curvature into the Euclidean plane such that geodesics go to lines. From this point of view the previously intractable step--how to go from a hyperbolic surface to the hyperbolic plane--suggests itself immediately, and we obtain the projective disc model. Now, one way of looking at this construction is to say that it consists of putting a constant-curvature metric on a disc. This point of view is sufficiently abstract to work in n dimensions, as Beltrami shows in his second paper. As a bonus he exploits two other constant-curvature metrics to obtain the other two fundamental models of hyperbolic geometry: the conformal disc model and the half plane model. (Especially for the second paper one is very grateful for Stillwell's introductions.)

Next, Felix Klein. Instead of differential geometry, Klein approches the subject from the point of view of projective geometry. Indeed, Beltrami's projective disc metric begs to be interpreted in terms of projective geometry: the distance between two points in the circle is easily expressed in terms of the cross-ratio of these two points and the two colinear points on the circle. Similarly, projective geometry subsumes spherical and Euclidean geometry as well.

Lastly, there are three little texts by Poincar�, from a third viewpoint: complex function theory. The isometries of Beltrami's half plane model are readily described in terms of linear fractional transformations (in fact, the harmony is even more marked in three dimensions, as Poincar� soon realises). But we can also go "backwards", i.e. we can deduce Beltrami's metric from the isometry group. This proves to be a very rewarding shortcut indeed, since we can employ the built-in geometry of complex function theory.

About the Author
Sarah Lynn's three young sons taught her how to race toy cars. Together they?ve used their imaginations to create roads everywhere (couch, kitchen floor, dirt, sand, rug, and the bathtub, just for starters.) The idea for 1-2-3 Va-Va-Vroom! came to Sarah when she was teaching her oldest son to write numbers. They began imagining the pencil as a car drawing its own track. Those vroom-vroom sounds made writing numbers so much more fun. Sarah is also the author of Tip-Tap Pop, illustrated by Valeria Docampo. She lives with her family in Camarillo, California.

Lisa Johnson is a marketing pioneer, skilled researcher, and expert on consumer behavior. She is the coauthor of "Don't Think Pink" and CEO of The Reach Group, an international marketing consultancy that helps companies create more compelling brand experiences for women (ReachWomen.com) and the Connected Generation (ReachGroupConsulting.com).

Irene E. Schoenberg has taught ESL for more than two decades at Hunter College's International English Language Institute and at Columbia University's American Language Program. She has trained ESL and EFL teachers at Columbia University's Teachers College and at the New School University. The Growth of Love

I really enjoyed this book. Throughout the book you really grow to love the characters that Parker has written, and you feel for them as they face the issues continually growing between them. I do love that their journey to salvation was real, and that their love grew only when they began to accept the Love of God. Thanks for writing! Keep doing it,and I'll keep reading.

LOVED IT!

This was not what I expected. It was funny, intimate, had lessons from the bible and I could get enough. It was nice to read a romance book that didn't have one sex scene in it. I think that's why I it surprised me. The bible reference,the comedy, everything. Absolutely loved every page.

Ten years later, a sequel to the runaway bestseller The Tao of Pooh. If you like marshmallow laced with arsenic, it was worth the wait. In the original, as you may recall, Hoff had an Idea: that Winnie-the-Pooh could be used to explain Taoism, the ancient Chinese way of balance. Now, as luck would have it, Pooh's buddy Piglet turns out to be the perfect embodiment of Te, the Taoist term for virtue, which is attained through sensitivity, modesty, and smallness. Piglet, you see, is a ``Very Small Animal'' (for all his talk about smallness, Hoff, like A.A. Milne, who must be groaning in his grave, likes capital letters Very Much), and the diminutive porker's adventures are the perfect means to preach, Very Lightly, about being positive and ecological and upright. The trick is to ``observe, deduce, apply''; once done, the millennial ``Day of Piglet'' will arrive and human beings will once again achieve ``the state of paradise that existed before the Great Separation occurred.'' Watch out, though: All is not summer in the 100-Acre Wood. About the Author
Benjamin Hoff grew up in a rural area a few miles from Portland, Oregon. As a child, he preferred to spend his time outdoors, observing animals, insects, and plants. And from an early age he loved to write. He is also the author of the New York Times bestseller The Tao of Pooh and The Diary of Opal Whiteley.

is an amazing book. Hoff should have stopped there

The Tao of Pooh, is an amazing book. Hoff should have stopped there. This book isn't glaringly awful, I didn't destroy it after reading it or anything. But really, this book is just not as good as I expected it would be. Towards the end Hoff does a lot talking about what is essentially a doomsday and what's wrong with our society through the stylistic veil of "The Tao of Pooh" This book seemed more like a personal rant presented through the incredibly successful form of "The Tao of Pooh"

Get "The Tao of Pooh" instead, just read that. Pretend that this book doesn't exist.

Loved Te of Pooh, Hated This

Benjamin Hoff used this as a soap box to rant about nuclear power, political correctness, 1990s education and even microwave ovens! These issues did not resonate as timeless and were tedious to someone hoping for more on Tao philosophy. I did finish it, and there was a sprinkling of Toa even in the last pages. Don't know that I would have kept reading if I hadn't been stuck in a hotel in Arlington on a very cold January day!

An Apocalyptic Rant

I too thought this was going to be a book in the same vein as the original, with cute quips and parodies on the Winnie the Pooh stories. I read it from beginning to ends waiting for them to show up. Instead, I endured through a rant, in a very un-Taoist manner, about how Mr. Hoff seems to think that the Human race is the apex of what the universe has been created for and now, we have ruined the happy ending.

He needs to remember that whether we destroy ourselves and the world we live in is only a part of what will be a millennium of millennia where the cycle of life and death revolves indefinitely. Then, through all his badgering of poor Eeyore, he himself epitomized the Eeyore Principle by whining, taking an extreme position and judging others actions instead of accepting the world as it is, for what it is, regardless of how he feels it should be.

So basically this book, through Mr. Hoff's words, is a lesson of what the meaning of Te is not.

Great book for anyone trying to learn Hebrew on your own. I use Hebrew from scratch in my ulpan in NYC and a lot of the vocabulary is covered in this book. The CD is a great help. Extensive explanations are done in English. Get this if your learning on your own. I have used it for explanations for my rosetta stone.
