Generally, the examples included in such books are very interesting from the point of view of mathematics, without necessarily having much practical value. Usually, they are written using complicated mathematical language, so that except in rare cases, their content becomes incomprehensible to engineers, researchers, students, and sometimes even to professors at technical universities. The present book deals only with those issues of stability of motion that most often are encountered in the solution of scientific and technical problems. This allows the author to explain the theory in a simple but rigorous manner without going into minute details that would be of interest only to specialists. Also, using appropriate examples, he demonstrates the process of investigating the stability of motion from the formulation of a problem and obtaining the differential equations of perturbed motion to complete analysis and recommendations. About one fourth of the examples are from various areas of science and technology. Moreover, some of the examples and the problems have an independent value in that they could be applicable to the design of various mechanisms and devices. The present translation is based on the third Russian edition of 1987.

This book is an introduction to the theory of stability of motion. The principal focus of the book is to present the most effective methods, such as the direct method of Liapunov, stability in the first-order approximation, and frequency methods, which can be used in studying stability issues. Other chapters are devoted to the treatment of nonautonomous systems, systems with periodic coefficients (including Mathieu-Hill equations), automatic control systems, and the effects of force type on stability of motion. These chapters also include relevant theorems which were proved for the first time by the author. The book contains many practical examples with detailed solutions from various areas of science and engineering involving both mechanical and electromechanical systems. Basically, the present book is written for graduate students in engineering; however, the required level of mathematics does not exceed that of a typical engineering undergraduate knowledge in calculus. The book should also benefit educators, engineers, and scientists who use the theory of stability of motion in their work.

I think this would be most helpful to people who have little knowledge of mental health and cannot afford professional help. Evidence of an ecclesiasctical structure from the 1st century Church

This classical work of the writings of the earliest church Fathers points to an ecclesiastical structure before the close of the first century. Any student of the Bible will benefit immensely from knowing the history of the early Church, from which all the doctrines of Christendom emerged. This book also demonstrates that the Catholic Church existed from the Apostolic Age and was fundamental in forming the Scriptures, and determining the Canon as it presently exists. The devotion of the early Church to Christ is evident in the number of martyrs, as well. I highly recommend this book, as well as the other two volumes in this collection.

The Very Earliest Christian Writings after the New Testament

Unless you read Latin and koine Greek pretty well, the only way to access the earliest Christian writings after the New Testament is in English translation. This collection of early Patristic writings is easily the best. The selection of works is comprehesive and intelligent and the translations are clear and contemporary. The introductory material introducing each selection provides scholarly introduction to each work. Except for the needs of the most scholarly, who will have to equip themselves with the language skills mentioned above and tackle the manuscripts, this will serve as a valuable tool to any thinking person seriously interested in the early history of Christianity and the development of its doctrines and practices.

The book is an excellent resource to see how the early church fathers built on the teachings of the Apostles based on their writings. For example, you can see how they regarded the Eucharist as the body and blood of Jesus Christ and other foundational doctrines of the church. It is an excellent resource.

About the Author
Jo Hockley is currently research fellow/clinical nurse specialist at St Columba's Hospice, Edinburgh. She has worked within the hospice movement since 1979 but has spent most of her energies disseminating palliative care into the acute hospital sector. She has set up two hospital-based palliative care teams in the UK and has published widely on this subject and other practice issues in palliative care. She is currently working on a collaborative action research project with independent nursing homes in Edinburgh developing palliative care at the end of life. David Clark is Professor of Medical Sociology within the Academic Palliative Medicine Unit of the University of Sheffield. He has written widely on the sociology of religion, family life and end-of-life care and he has been involved in research and teaching in palliative care since 1989. His current interests include the history of hospice, palliative care and related fields; policy development and international issues in the growth of palliative care; and palliative care ethics.

About the Author
NATO THOMPSON is a writer and curator whose work primarily focuses on the intersection of art, politics, and the city. He has curated numerous large-scale exhibitions and projects both at the public arts institution Creative Time, where he is chief curator, and as a Curator at MASS MoCA. He is the editor of The Interventionists: A Users’ Manual for the Creative Disruption of Everyday Life, and author of Experimental Geography: Radical Approaches to Landscape, Cartography, and Urbanism (Melville House), and Ahistoric Occasion: Artists Making History. He lives in Philadelphia.

How artistry and activism can help create a better world

“Seeing Power” by Nato Thompson intelligently explores the meaning of art and activism as tools for social change. Mr. Thompson is a brilliant young art curator and an organizer with the activist art group, Creative Time. This well-written book will appeal to everyone who has ever pondered how we might join the imagined with the real to create the world we want.

Mr. Thompson knows that the corporate media (film, television, video games, radio etc.) have defined how most people have come to understand art today. However, the fine arts community is dependent upon these same connections to wealth, power and privilege. For that reason, the author believes that artists whose works are politically ambiguous tend to be more richly rewarded through the gallery system; whereas artists whose didactic messages make all too clear their political intent are not always valued. The implication is that politically-engaged artists must learn how to interrogate the social beyond the walls of the gallery system.

In fact, Mr. Thompson contends that our understanding of art is made as we experience the world around us. The author believes that Occupy Museums in 2011 illustrated how activism can successfully challenge the programming and funding practices of an elite institution. However, the author feels that artists must connect with the struggles of people whose communities have been impoverished by corporate economics and culture. Artistry joined with activism can help create a better world.

On that point, Mr. Thompson brings the discussion to life with many interesting examples of socially-engaged art. For example, the author himself had a role in organizing a performance of Waiting for Godot in the traumatized Lower Ninth Ward of post-Katrina New Orleans. He cites the performance artist Tania Bruguera as an example of “useful art” whose politics have drawn attention to the struggles of immigrant families in Queens, New York. I was also intrigued by the author’s description of the United Victorian Worker’s protest in 2005 that succeeded in confounding reality and performativity while highlighting age-old issues of labor, gender and justice.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

Best of all though is the excitement

This is an exceptional book. Complex ideas clearly set out in very readable prose. Best of all though is the excitement, the hope and the inspiration for those of us who make work with the fervent wish that our work will be a part of a crucial dialogue about the world we want to live in. I love Thompson's inclusion of the importance of conviviality in the process of us working at "the intersection of art and politics". Dont just read it - do it!

a powerful and cogent thesis for seeing and participating

Once in a while a book is written that sees deeply and clearly into the forces at work on and below the surface. We live in complicated times where things appear one way but scratch the surface another face appears. Nato has managed to layout an argument that parses some of the complexities affecting art and the forces that crease art. I believe this book is a powerful and cogent thesis for seeing.
