Excellent training materials for orthopaedic residents

The first edition was read at my residency and found it intuitive, helps a lot when I practiced in traumatology. After the Kindle edition, new sessions about locking plate was added and updated the previous information. I found it good in choosing implants and explaining choices to patients, and should be best for training resident doctors!

Here is a beginning of a Study on the Blood of Christ and the Covenant of Blood.

This book is an excellent tool for beginner students of the Word of God. I have known the Lord for over 60 years and getting younger everyday. To have a true understanding of the Cross of Calvary is nothing less than profound. Revelation knowledge is the key. Prayer earnestly that you might understand these holy truths because many are there that are in the grave that we thought were going to heaven and did not make it.
To have stopped preaching and teaching about this the foundation of the Gospel was a sin against the body of Christ. The Books of those who wrote deeply about these truths are all gone off the shelves for modern religion and lack the power to save anyone. This Book I strongly recommend to anyone who knows deep down inside that their life is not right with God.
There is a simple test you can run on your own heart. If you took the time to think about standing face to face with God and being truthful with yourself could you say without a shadow of a doubt that you are standing in the perfect will of God at this very moment and just sit there and think about if for a bit and if you doubt have some sense that something is wrong then read the book anyway.
This book will explode with revelation knowledge to the one who is seeking to know God with all of their heart.

In Schwarz's view, the Peace Corps, which marks its 30th anniversary this year, is politically complex and far less successful than its public image would suggest. Though probably over-romanticized as a Kennedy-era innovation that lured idealistic college students into its ranks, the Corps' ongoing presence, according to volunteers interviewed here, was often in need of overhaul, depending on who occupied the White House. We learn that not all volunteers were heroic--not all lived among the underdeveloped peoples they were purportedly to serve, and not all were equipped, psychologically or technically, to help the world's poor. Concluding on a note of limited optimism for the future of the Corps, which is currently enjoying a surge in applications, Schwarz, a Penthouse editor, effectively shapes the mosaic of volunteers' experiences. As the Peace Corps prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary, this well-executed combination of history and personal narrative offers the first comprehensive look at this remarkable institution from its birth as a Kennedy campaign promise in 1960 to its 1990 expansion into Eastern Europe. Individual sections give an overview of political and domestic issues that shaped the corps during each presidential administration, followed by short reflections by scores of volunteers serving during that time. The arrangement provides a good understanding of how the corps changed from its early idealism to its present practical role, and the epilog is an insightful prognosis of the corps' future. Prospective volunteers--most of whom are recent college graduates--will be especially interested in the numerous personal accounts. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.

To mark the Peace Corps's 30th anniversary, Penthouse editor Schwarz presents a thorough history of the agency through interviews with former volunteers and staff directors. Schwarz accompanies her volunteers' testimonies with behind- the-scenes reporting on how the policies of each new President affected the agency. The Kennedy Administration launched the Peace Corps by sending out more volunteers than could be placed, with the idea that a massive campaign would be less likely to be dismantled. Nixon answered the growing radicalism of returned volunteers--some of whom took over the agency's national offices in May 1970--by reducing the agency's budget and assigning a new oversight organization that replaced the Peace Corps's own name in the phone book. Schwarz also shows the positive side of Nixon's efforts to change the agency from what one volunteer termed ``an extension of junior year abroad'' into one that attracted older, skilled professionals. Schwarz's well-placed criticism does not lead her to dismiss the Peace Corps--she simply accepts the adage of former volunteer Becky Raymond, who served in Niger from 1978 to 1981 and who says, ``You learn to accept small successes.'' Schwarz ends with her own recommendations to improve the Peace Corps's international standing by increasing the volunteers' contact with other volunteer programs in their host country, increasing the standards for volunteers' language and technical skills, and reestablishing the ``reverse Peace Corps'' that invited foreign professionals to live and work in the US. A well-researched history punctuated with quotes that reflect the warmth, anger, and, sometimes, apathy of Americans living in the Third World. A must read for prospective Peace Corps volunteers. Insightful, informative, and refreshing

I read this book when I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mongolia in 1999. Although Schwarz's interviews ended seven years before I served, I found the experiences that she details so familiar, and unlike the public's common perception of Peace Corps, and of PCVs. This book is unique in that Schwarz herself was not a PCV, and so her approach is more objective and journalistic, rather than self-centered and biased toward one particular experience. I highly recommend it.

Exceptional Guide to Designing Your Own Workbench

Kudos to Chris Schwarz et al. for revisiting the first book and creating this exceptionally well-written and researched collection of work!

~ Hundreds of photos detailing key fabricating and assembly processes
~ Nine plans that are also available in Google SketchUp format
~ Numerous practical thoughts and interesting philosophies to guide you to build a great customized bench
~ Chapter devoted to work holding hardware, (but does not discuss the brilliant BenchCrafted Criscross)
~ Entire chapter of drawings on bench designs that an intermediate woodworker could easily build from
~ Nice section on building a wall hung tool rack
~ Chris's challenge: Chapter Seventeen, The Best Bench Never Built

If you are up to the task of creating a bench to last a lifetime, you'll love this book.

Very good, but mostly a collection of articles

It is hard to tell if what you are reading, at some points, is by the author or another of his journalist colleagues. That said, I found this book to be very useful in building my own workbench. I would not not say that this book is essential, but that it is very helpful.

You may want to look elsewhere if you are a power tool, or hybrid style woodworker. Although the author attempts to describe some of the differences, he is honest in his preferences, and I felt the need to adapt my own design for my own needs. This is not a criticism, just an observation.

One other note. Since the author's approach is to describe his own "superior" design and then critique several other designs against his, if you don't like his "best" design, you may be frustrated with his singular-design-centrism.

All you ever wanted to know about workbenchs

Very well written book, one of the few that made me laugh while learning. The author covers quite a few different workbench's, different methods of construction, different types of vises and there placement. The author also explores different types of woods to use in the construction of the workbench. He includes plans for each bench discussed along with an evaluation of each built. Yes, he actually built the workbenches and he includes the pros and cons he discovered during and after the building. He discusses what he would change on the builds and why he would do the build differently in the future. Best I have read on the subject, I would recommend that it be included in the library of any friend who asked me about the book.

Orthodox biblical scholarship

Martin Hegel is one of the most famous of biblical scholars, and the "Johannine Question" sums up his findings on the gospel of John.

Some of the more interesting points he makes: The title 'euangelion kata ioannen...was not given at a later date" (P 74) to the gospel. On the contrary. "Its early origin follows from a lack of any variant titles...these facts make a later transference very improbable...Not only the letter and the Apocalypse, but also the gospel, were connected with John of Ephesus from the beginning" (P 74).

He gives an explantion of how the gospel was spead, and, unlike many other scholars today, he argues for a "lively exchange between the leading communities...when the four earliest gospels were circulated" (P 75).

I was especially struck by the numerous historical details Hengel found. And by the fact that the gospel is written in a koine Greek with a marked semitic, even Hebraic flavor, a feature "which is also typical of the Apolcalypse" (P 110). There are huge similarities between the Greek John uses and the Qumran documents, as well as the newly edited Samaritan sources like Memar Marqua.

A pity this isn't more widely available.

WAS “JOHN THE ELDER,” NOT THE APOSTLE JOHN, THE AUTHOR OF THE FOURTH GOSPEL?

Martin Hengel (1926-2009) was a German historian of religion who taught at the University of T�bingen, specializing in the "Second Temple Period" or "Hellenistic Period" of early Judaism and Christianity. He wrote other books such as Crucifixion, Between Jesus and Paul, The Son of God: The Origin of Christology and the History of Jewish-Hellenistic Religion, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1989 book, “This book… is based on the five Stone Lectures which I gave at Princeton Theological Seminary in autumn 1987… The English text … has been expanded at a number of points… behind it lies a substantially more extensive German manuscript which has yet to be published… The basic thesis presented in the lectures clearly goes against many views which are popular today. Among other things, I believe that the broad witness … of Christian writers of the second century to the Johannine corpus or the Fourth Gospel deserves more attention than it is usually given… Furthermore, it seems to me unmistakable that the Gospel and the letters are not the expression of a community with many voices, but above all the voice of a towering theologian, the founder and head of the Johannine school. We need to be interested in his theological thought, which is quite equal to that of Paul…”

He says of the “beloved disciple”: “The identification of this disciple, who at the end of the Gospel is introduced as the author of the work, with any particular well-known figure among the disciples of Jesus in the Gospel itself, is persistently avoided. He appears for the first time only in the nocturnal farewell discourse less than a day before the death of Jesus; and even in the additional chapter 21… a clear characterization is deliberately made impossible by the reference to the anonymous ‘other two of his disciples’ (21.2). The reason for this mysterious procedure is difficult to explain. If the disciples of the school knew his name as a matter of course why did they keep it (half)-secret from the other communities to which copies of the Gospel were sent? Had the editors wanted definitely to designate him the son of Zebedee known as the second disciple after Peter, this would easily have been possible. There must be deeper reasons why they leave the question open in an ambiguous way. I need not go further into the other attempts at identification from the Gospel itself: Lazarus; Nathanael, Thomas, or even outsiders like John Mark, Paul or a brother of Jesus.” (Pg. 77-78)

He says, “we can make a provisional assessment. Behind the ‘Johannine community’ and the Johannine corpus, letters, Gospel (and Apocalypse) there is one head, an outstanding teacher who founded a school which existed between about 60 or 70 and 100/110 in Asia Minor and developed a considerable activity extending beyond the region and who---as an outsider---claimed to have been a disciple of Jesus, indeed---in the view of the school---a disciple of quite special kind. This teacher… must have attained an extremely great age and therefore was known as ‘the elder’ in the school and the communities connected with it… The school itself, however, seems quickly to have dissolved; there is no indication that there was a further succession of heads after the elder… Its rapid disintegration also makes it very improbable that the ‘elder’ founded a separate church of his own.” (Pg. 80-81)

He observes, “This brings us back to the figure of the ‘beloved disciple,’ who indeed appears only on Jesus’ last day, and then again in the last appearance in Galilee. At least the editors associated him with the author of the Gospel, i.e., in my view with John the ‘Elder.’ From him, standing as he does closest to Jesus in an ideal way and as the more successful ‘rival’ of Peter, the idiosyncratically ‘wholly other’ Fourth Gospel takes on its authority, which is meant to make it superior to the Synoptic-Petrine Gospels and their Jesus tradition. It seeks to see the ‘history’ of Jesus better… and at the same time in a much deeper christological understanding.” (Pg. 125)

He concludes, “The fact that, thirty or forty years after his death, church tradition identified him with the son of Zebedee and two hundred years later gave him the unique honorific title ‘ho theologos,’ was a recognition of his unique theological achievement. Behind that his individual personality retreated to such a degree that down to the present day research has almost completely lost sight of it. But with the unique theological individuality of his work we should try to rediscover at least the shadow of this great teacher to whom the church owes a good part of its foundation.” (Pg. 134-135)

This creative and thought-provoking book will be of great interest to anyone studying the Fourth Gospel, or other Johannine writings.

About the Author

Michael N. Forster is currently Alexander von Humboldt Professor, holder of the Chair in Theoretical Philosophy, and Co-director of the International Center for Philosophy at the University of Bonn. He taught for 28 years at the University of Chicago, where he served for 10 years as chairman of the Philosophy Department and was Glen A. Lloyd Distinguished Service Professor. His historical work is on ancient philosophy and especially German philosophy, his systematic work mainly on epistemology and philosophy of language. He has published numerous articles and 7 books.

Kristin Gjesdal is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Temple University. She works in the areas of German Idealism, phenomenology, and hermeneutics. Her work has appeared in journals such as Kant-Studien, Hegel-Studien, Journal of the History of Philosophy, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and British Journal of the History of Philosophy. Her book Gadamer and the Legacy of German Idealism appeared with Cambridge University Press in 2009.
