Blood Bond

William W. Johnstone has done it again. He has created a new set of characters to rate right up next to Smoke and Preacher. But this Blood Bond is of a different type than the two legendary mountain men, these are blood brothers. Two men, from two different worlds brought together through a bond of trust, and curiosity of each others ways. Matt Bodine, a son of a frontier rancher's family, and Samuel Two Wolves, an Eastern educated son of a Cheyenne War Chief and a White aristocrat. These men have a close, yet volatile kinship. Both are torn between feelings of respect for the "old ways" and the certain knowledge that those ways cannot survive the oncoming settlement of the West.
A must for any Johnstone diehard. You will ride trails these men have ridden, and share in the kinship that they feel for each other. Well written, with strong character development. You will look forward to each new adventure these two brothers share in their, Blood Bond.

Blood Bond

William W Johnston is one of my all time favorite authors and he has introduced two new story charactors in this book and carries them thru a very exciting tale of the old west, with focus on the Great Indian Wars of the 1870s on the great plains of Wyoming and Montana.

Excellent read since it delves into actual history.

A book to whet one's appetite for the whole series.

Having enjoyed the mountain man series and the last gunfighter series I came across this book first in the library: it certainly whetted my appetite to go on and read the whole series. Sam and Matt are involved in a classic situation between sheepmen and cattlemen and, as is their wont, come in on the side of the underdogs even though they are cattle men themselves.

About the Author

Julie Lockwood is a Professor at Rutgers University.  Her research interests include conservation biology, population biology and biological invasions. 

Martha F. Hoopes is an Associate Professor at Mount Holyoke College. She has worked primarily with plants and insects on questions of spatial community dynamics and invasions.

Michael P. Marchetti is the Fletcher Jones Professor of Ecology at St. Mary's College of California.  He is an aquatic ecologist who primarily studies community and landscape aspects of freshwater invaders in the western U.S.

About the Author
LOUIS N. MOLINO Sr. has been an emergency services provider since 1981. During that time, he has served in a variety of positions, including firefighter, emergency medical technician, fire and emergency medical dispatcher, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) instructor, emergency medical dispatch instructor, fire and EMS training officer, fire and EMS agency safety officer, incident safety officer, hazardous materials technician, and HAZMAT team member. He has also served as the base liaison officer, captain, battalion chief, and assistant chief for Mutual Aid Emergency Services, Inc. (MAES), which provides EMS services to Fort Dix and McGuire Air Force Base.

I love this book

So I'm a huge HL nerd - full disclosure. I love this book. It was used...certainly showed it. Someone donated it to Goodwill somewhere in the midwest and they put it up on Amazon...smart cookies. Just lots of cool concept art and anecdotes from the development of the HL games...plus some other Valve stuff...CS and such. I love the architectural concept art. If you're as big a nerd as I am, you definitely need this book on your coffee table.

Great pictures, not much else

I guess I was looking for more of the details behind the making of Half-life 2, not just tons of concept art. The artwork is very nicely presented in rich glossy color, but the behind the scenes content isn't there. If you want a better book for looking behind the scenes of a computer game, get the Doom 3 Making Of book instead.

A nice resource on the art and creation of Half-life 2

I bought this book hours after I finished Half-Life 2, still excited about the world I'd just played through. It didn't disapoint. Not only does it have an ample amount of sketches (from Half-life 1 AND Half-life 2) and earlier/scrapped monster and level designs, it has commentary on nearly all of them from various staff-members. The book has information on the voice actors, level construction, some story samples passed around Valve as an example of the atmosphere they were trying to achieve, real-life architectual influences on the game and a few interesting tidbits on the world itself we never find out in the game. (For example, want to know a bit more about the mysterious Combine? Want to know what a fully-evolved headcrab looks like? Things like these are scattered around the book)
If you're one of those people who wants to know "What changed from Valve's original vision for Half-life 2?" (and some of those changes are surprising and quite substantial) or "How did the artists and designers and coders work together?" or if you just enjoy seeing sketches and concept designs (which are always interesting to look at and in some cases, even beautiful) this is the perfect book for you.

About the Author
Sapper' is the pen name of Herman Cyril McNeile, born in 1888 at the Naval Prison in Bodmin, Cornwall, where his father was Governor. He served in the Royal Engineers (popularly known as ‘sappers’) from 1907-19, being awarded the Military Cross during World War 1. McNeile started writing in France, adopting the pen name because serving officers were not allowed to write under their own names. When his first stories, about life in the trenches, were published in 1915 they were an enormous success. But it was his first thriller, ‘Bulldog Drummond’ (1920) that launched him as one of the most popular novelists of his generation. It had several amazingly successful sequels, including ‘The Black Gang’, ‘The Third Round’ and ‘The Final Count’. Another great success was ‘Jim Maitland’, featuring a footloose English sahib in foreign lands. Sapper published nearly thirty books in total, and a vast public mourned his death in 1937, at the early age of forty-eight. There are several feature films of his work.

Bulldog Drummond Of Romney Marsh

This is another exciting Bulldog Drummond adventure. Full of mystery and betrayal and stolen treasure. My only complaint is I really find the writing style of Sapper to get in the way. He uses a third party as the story teller which sometimes means we don't know what's happening with Hugh Drummond when he's not with the story teller. It's a little like Dr Watson telling the Sherlock Homes adventures but even more disruptive to the narrative.

Dedicated to the investigation of fortifications as important and integral elements of ancient built space, the present volume results from the activity of the German based international research network Fokus Fortifikation. Ancient Fortifications in the Eastern Mediterranean and is intended as a guide to research on ancient fortifications and a source of inspiration for new research. Ancient city walls and other fortification structures have long been underestimated. Since the early years of the 21st century, research on ancient fortifications has experienced an international boom, particularly amongst young researchers. They approached the study of fortifications with fresh ideas and new aims, and felt the need to discuss the problems and potentials of these monuments and to develop harmonized research methods and objectives. The outcome is the present bilingual (English and German) book, which offers a condensed view of the network's extended conversations. The goal is not so much to offer an overview on the development of ancient fortifications, but rather to present versatile and diverse approaches to their research and interpretation and to serve as a kickoff for a new understanding of this category of ancient buildings. The book is divided into two parts: the first part includes 12 chapters on methods of interpretation, documentation, and field project organization; the systematic description and presentation of fortifications; the ‘building experience'; masonry forms and techniques; defensive, symbolic, and urbanistic functions and aspects; on fortifications in written sources, the visual arts, and as a historical source; and on regional and rural fortifications, and regionally confined phenomena. Part two is a catalogue that offers exemplary presentations of fortifications studied by network members; it is arranged in four sections: regions, sites, architectural elements and architectural details. The book is Volume 1 in the new series Fokus Fortifikation Studies. Volume 2 in the series, Focus on Fortification: New Research on Fortifications in the Ancient Mediterranean and the Near East (Oxbow Books), the proceedings of an international conference held in Athens in December 2012, will also appear in 2015.

About the Author
Dr Silke M�th is a classical archaeologist. She did her PhD at the Free University of Berlin on the topography and town planning of ancient Messene and was as a lecturer there for five years, doing research on doing research on the city walls of Messene and Zeugma. Currently she is working on the symbolic functions of Greek and Roman fortifications as a research fellow at the German Archaeological Institute at Athens with funding from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Further research interests include Greek and Roman urbanism and interdisciplinary approaches between archaeology and ancient history.

Dr Peter Iren�us Schneider is a Bauforscher specialized in archaeology. He conducted several field projects in Turkey (Hasankeyf, Miletos) and Saudi-Arabia (Tayma), organized a number of conferences and edited volumes on ancient architecture. Currently he is visiting professor for Building Archaeology and Conservation of Sites at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus - Senftenberg.

Mike Schnelle is a Bauforscher specialized in archaeology. Mr Schnelle has got extensive experience as a field archaeologist and is working on a PhD focussed on the Sabaean fortifications of the cities of Sirwah and Marib in Yemen. Since 2012 he is research associate at the Sanaa Branch of the German Archaeological Institute and he is currently involved in several projects of the Branch in Sirwah, Marib and Tan'im in Yemen and Yeha and Hawelti in Ethiopia.

Peter D. De Staebler is a classical archaeologist and architectural historian, with field experience in Turkey, Italy, and Greece. He completed his PhD at the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, on the city wall of Aphrodisiais in Turkey, and was assistant director of the Aphrodisias Regional Survey Project. He has worked as a curator and teacher and presently is Visiting Assistant Professor at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture, in the Programs for Sustainable Planning and Development. Additional research interests include the use of spolia, monolithic columns, the display and interpretation of antiquity.
