This book is intended for students in the health care professions, such as nurses, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, physicians and physician assistants, respiratory therapists, social workers, and students in the medical laboratory sciences. While it targets students, the text may also serve as a reference for those already practicing in their respective disciplines.

As a textbook, it could fit well into various levels of the curriculum wherever a course specifically addresses or includes psychosocial aspects of illness and disability, such as courses in social psychology of disability and rehabilitation, chronic illness, and rehabilitation psychology. This textbook would also be useful in courses that include issues in communication, family relationships, client-professional relationships, characteristics of illness and disability, adaptation to impairment and disability, manifestations of client behavior, grieving and adjusting to loss, sources of stress and support, and attitudinal and cultural differences. Therefore, it can be thought of as multilevel, being incorporated into basic, intermediate, and advanced courses.

We had three compelling reasons to write such a text. The primary purpose is to help readers understand that a key ingredient for clinical competence and professional excellence is the human factor. Second, we strongly believe in the need for clinicians to understand psychosocial aspects of health care so that they may best help clients optimize their therapeutic outcomes. This foundation area is often overlooked or devalued in favor of the "hard core" components of health care. Lastly, as educators with collectively over 100 years of experience with clients and students, we are concerned with the reported and perceived lack of students' interest in textbooks, level of readership, and appreciation of the importance of this subject in their treatment armamentarium. We believe that the style and approach of this book will hold the readers' attention and enhance their understanding of the material.

The book is divided into six parts, each subdivided into chapters. Relevant clinical examples are interspersed throughout every chapter, punctuating topic points. Real-life student journal entries introduce and are entwined throughout every chapter, reinforcing the subject, identifying biases and "too-quick" conclusions, and portraying a cross-section of disciplines, ethnicity, and cultures of health care professionals. The description and reflection of realistic, although fictitious, clinical situations add to the fabric of the discussion, creating a living case study, a breathing client problem. Reflective questions conclude each chapter, allowing for individual musings, classroom discussion, small group exercises, and student assignments. Additional readings are suggested to engage readers in further personal accounts, histories, and insights. Readers will develop self-awareness as they learn more about the psychosocial issues of health care.

Part I, "Making a Connection: Talking, Listening, and Showing You Care," addresses components of effective communication, motivation and adherence, family needs, roles, and responsibilities, and understanding your own beliefs as a health provider. Part II, "Shared Goal-Setting: Client-Professional Collaboration," explores quality of life, clients' rights and provider responsibilities, collaborative treatment-planning, and the mind-body-spirit connection. Part III, "Defining Self," discusses body image and self-concept, condition-specific characteristics, and sexuality. Part IV, "Responses to Illness and Disability that Complicate Care," considers psychiatric disorders, self-destructive behaviors, and chronic illness. Part V, "The Continuum of Loss, Grieving, and Adjustment," delves into understanding loss/grief, and adjustment related to disease, disability, and death. Finally, Part VI, "Attitudes and Perspectives: Respecting Human Differences," examines client, caregiver, and health provider personalities, attitudinal and cultural differences, and conflict.

Because readers of this text come from many health care disciplines, each with its own jargon, we have had to make editorial decisions for the sake of consistency. We have used "client" to name those with whom we work. "Caregiver" refers to personal caregivers and may be family, friends, or others with caregiving responsibilities. Variations of "health care professionals" and "health care providers" represent the readership, those who have chosen to make a career of providing care. Examples of clients and caregivers reflect both the diversity and lifespan issues inherent in today's health care environment. Similarly, the health professions and the students in the journal entries also depict our changing world.

Great and easy book to read, learn and discuss the topics with family, friends and colleagues. Definitely, topics that all health care providers should become more familiar with. The book helps you understand what our patients and their families/caregivers are going through which ultimately would enable us to provide better care.

A decent book to have on hand. Most of it is common sense and I purchased this for an online class. The class was easy and a bit of a joke, but if this is the main area of your field of interest then go for it. It arrived in a timely fashion and in good condition.

The art and craft for case writing

This is an excellent book for case writing. I really like the examples found at the end of the book regarding a real case situation and the decision made at the end of the company. I also like the ways we can compare and contrast the format of a case study and the actual case I am writing about.
The author has authority about this subject matter by the credentials mentioned in the book. Moreover, the division about the student learning case and the professor's instruction manual is confusing. It seems that the student's case needs improvement and the instructor's manual is the finished product. I find the instructor's manual very captivating in terms of the comprehensiveness of the case analysis. That is why I like this book because I patterned my own case writing and analysis from the student case towards the instructor's manual, although I have no intentions of teaching how to write case studies in the university.

Among the books she has edited are "The Awakening and Selected Stories of Kate Chopin," "Herland and Selected Stories of Charlotte Perkins Gilman," and "Once Upon a Childhood: Stories and Memoirs of American Youth" (with Eileen Panetta.) She lives in New Rochelle, New York.
Eileen Panetta is Associate Professor of English at Iona College. She is coeditor of "Once Upon a Childhood "(with Barbara H. Solomon). She lives in New York City.

Good Mainly as an Introduction to Indian Writing in English from the 1980s and 90s

This book was published in 2009 and contained 24 works by as many authors. There were 20 short stories and excerpts from 4 novels.

About half of the selections were from the 1990s and another quarter or so from the 80s. There was almost nothing from the first two decades after partition in 1947 (just Saadat Hasan Manto and R. K. Narayan), a handful of stories from the 70s, and one work from 2006 (Kiran Desai).

The oldest writers in the collection were Narayan (1906-2001), Manto (1912-55) and Khushwant Singh (1915-). The youngest were Ginu Kamani (1962-), Jhumpa Lahiri (1967-) and Kiran Desai (1971-). Others of note included those who gained prominence from the 1980s and after (Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Rohinton Mistry, Amitav Ghosh, Shashi Tharoor and Vikram Chandra), earlier writers (Ruskin Bond, Anita Desai, Bharati Mukherjee, Ambai), and a few others such as Anjana Appachana and Chitra Bannerjee Divakaruni. Missing from the lineup were Arundhati Roy as well as Upamanyu Chatterjee and Manjula Padmanabhan.

The anthology's focus was almost entirely on Indian authors in English. All selections were written originally in this language, except for Manto's, translated from Urdu, and Ambai's, from Tamil. In focusing on the writers in English, Passages was very much along the lines of Salman Rushdie and Elizabeth West's Mirrorwork: 50 Years of Indian Writing 1947-1997, published in 1997. At about two-thirds the length, Passages omitted writers in Mirrorwork who were old (Nirad Chaudhuri, Mulk Raj Anand, Kamala Markandaya) and more stylistically challenging (G. V. Desani, I. Allan Sealy). On the other hand, it contained interesting writers Rushdie and West left out, such as Bond, Singh, Mukherjee and Divakaruni.

The authors in Passages included two writers of Indian heritage who were born in the West and citizens of Canada or the U.S. (Baldwin, Lahiri). There was also Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (1927-), a woman of Jewish heritage who was born in Germany, married an Indian and spent many years in India. At least 10 of the other authors were living in the West at the time this anthology was compiled.

A number of the stories in this anthology could be said to deal with social relations -- within the family, between families, between families and neighbors. Some dealt with families living between India and the West (husbands and wives, parents and children, couples and their parents), or Indians living abroad. Memorable stories included the ones by Bond, in which the Anglo-Indian narrator returned to the village where he'd lived happily before partition, recording the passage of time but managing to end on a note of acceptance. The one by Manto set during partition riots, which ended chillingly. A work by Anita Desai about a farewell party that captured moments of warmth and abandon, with an undercurrent of sadness. The piece by Divakaruni, in which a poor girl recalled moments of happiness amid family turbulence. And an excerpt from Seth's A Suitable Boy that described a struggle between academics. Humor was provided by Singh's "The Bottom-Pincher," narrated by a dirty old man. The story by Appachana, about a traditional mother's concern for her free-spirited daughter who'd left to attend grad school in the States, was written in the third person but conveyed well the central character's thinking, as well as differences in traditional and modern values, and was one of the most moving stories of all.

Missing from this collection might be the type of introspective, sardonic outlook contained in some writing by, for example, Upamanyu Chatterjee. Something on caste relations and Hindu-Moslem relations. Politically satirical writing. And something containing magical realism, dense and complex. For this reader, there were a few too many stories on struggles within families.

In confining itself almost entirely to authors writing in English and focusing mainly on the 1990s and 80s, this collection had to neglect many interesting Indian authors in other languages since 1947. A partial list would include, in Bengali, the Marxist Manik Bandyopadhyay (1908-56) and Sunil Gangopadhyay (1934-). In Hindi, Phanishwarnath Renu (1921-77) and Nirmal Verma (1929-2005). In Kannada, U. R. Anantha Murthy (1932-), Devanuru Mahadeva (1949-) and Jayant Kaikini (1955-). In Malayalam, T. S. Pillai, (1914-99), O. V. Vijayan (1930-2005) and M. T. Vasudevan Nair (1933-). In Marathi, Gangadhar Gadgil (1923-), Vyankatesh Madgulkar (1927-2001) and Rangnath Pathare (1950-). In Punjabi, Kartar Singh Duggal (1917-) and Kulwant Singh Virk (1923-87). In Tamil, S. Mani (1907-85) and Sundara Ramaswamy (1931-2005). And in Urdu, K. A. Abbas (1914-87) Ismat Chughtai (1915-92), Qurratulain Hyder (1927-2007), Surendra Prakash (1930-) and Naiyer Masud (1936-).

Passages might be taken as a simpler introduction to Indian writing in English than Mirrorwork, which is longer and more comprehensive. For those seeking Indian writers translated from other languages, decent anthologies include The Penguin Book of Modern Indian Short Stories (1989, revised 2001) and Volume 2 of Best Loved Indian Stories of the Century (1999). Larger, more comprehensive introductions include Our Favourite Indian Stories (2001), with 40 works, nearly all of them translation from other languages, and The Vintage Book of Modern Indian Literature (2004), with 55 works, about half of them translated from other languages. A readable, very light intro to a handful of Indian writers, most of them translated from other languages, is India: A Traveler's Literary Companion (2010).

When Alekos Gionakis, Greek tycoon and CEO of a wealthy ship building enterprise agrees to let his personal assistant Sara Lovejoy take a one month holiday after the death of her mother, he expects her to return and be the same as she was when she left – a competent, efficient, and rather plain looking woman. For two years Sara has been his right hand woman, but never on his ‘male’ radar.

But the Sara who returns to him is not a woman he recognizes at all. She’s cut her hair, gotten a total clothing makeover and now looks like someone he’d squire on his arm to any number of society parties. He suspects it’s a new man in her life, and is surprised at the spark of jealousy he feels. Her attention to the job is the same – but now he can’t keep his eyes off of her.

After working without a vacation for so long, the death of her mother is Sara’s last straw. She’s received a startling revelation – her father is a well known politician with whom her mother had an affair, and had kept the secret of her pregnancy until on her death bed. Revealing the truth to him, her father invites her to stay with him in France and Sara’s vacation, already planned, takes a bit of a detour. Her father’s wife recently passed away and his two children Frederick and Charlotte are unaware of his infidelity and for now he wants to keep it that way, not ready to reveal to the world that Sara is his daughter. But seeing photos of her half sister makes Sara aware of how dowdy she looks in comparison and this is what prompts her total makeover. And she can’t deny that after having a crush on her boss from afar, she’s hoping he’ll see her in a new light when she returns. And he definitely does!

The spark of attraction lit between them won’t be put out easily, and leads instead to an intimacy neither saw coming. When Sara reveals to Alekos who her father is, Alekos realizes that he can use the information to his advantage for business purposes. A fake relationship looks to be beneficial for both of them as it will also give her access to her half siblings without having to reveal her relationship to them – but what happens if they start to have real feelings for each other?

This is my first time reading this author and I enjoyed how everything came together. Sara’s reasons for getting a makeover were her own decisions, not prompted by a male telling her how she looked, which I definitely appreciated. I found the connection between Alekos and Sara believable and their chemistry leads to some sexy love scenes. Alekos’s brother died when he was younger and Alekos believes it was suicide due to a broken heart. This has tainted all his relationships with women and made him leery of commitment so he struggles with his feelings for Sara.

The latter half of the story deals with a lot of issues – Sara’s family, Alekos’s family, Sara’s job and desires for her future, Alekos’s company problems, and the conflicts between the show they are putting on for the public as a committed couple versus the reality behind the scenes. It all adds up to an entertaining plot, lovely settings (including some aboard Alekos’s yacht and his Greek island hideaway), a sexy romance and an eventual happy ending. If you like workplace romances with handsome Greek devils and competent, smart women, you'll enjoy this story.
